Jewish Heritage Foundation,
founded recently, with head-
quarters at 2140 Westwood
Blvd., Los Angeles, is attracting
nationwide attention.
Under the direction of the
noted author of a dozen books
on the religions of the world,
Joseph Gaer, the JHF hopes
to provide solution to the prob-
lem that has arisen over Jew-
ish youths' "rapidly drifting
away from Judaism as a way of
life."
"Though half a million Jew-
ish children — 5 to 17 — are
enrolled in Jewish schools, at

World Scientists
Are .Weizmann
Instltute Guests

REHOVOTH — Six overseas
scientists have arrived at the
Weizmann Institute of Science
to spend varying periods in re-

reached by any aspect of educa-
tion in their heritage," Gaer
stated.
He stated that the JHF's
ultimate objectives are "to con-
centrate on those elements of
our cultural heritage that have
relevance for our time, leav-
ing for the students of ancient
customs and more those ele-
ments that have no immediate
pertinence for us today."
Gaer declared that "JHF
will strive to re-create the
elements of Jewish culture
for our youth in such a way
that they will be acceptable
as culture, and can become
part of the culture of Amer-
ica, when we live and thrive.
To accomplish its aim, JHF
is undertaking to publish a
"Talmud for Family Reading,"
critical estimates of Yiddish
literature, Jewish historical and
philosophical works, books that
will evaluate every facet of
Jewish thinking.
The JHF already is publish-
ing a bimothly magazine, Recall.
It conducts lecture series and
hopes to enter into many Amer-
ican Jewish areas with its
activities—by sponsoring its dis-
cussion programs through an
intensified membership which
is hoped to spread countrywide.
Gaer plans to visit Detroit to
present his program for an
enlarged JHF to local leaders
some time in May.

Samuel William Jacobs

Samuel William Jacobs,
B.C.L., LL.M., K.C., Member of
Parliament f or the Cartier
(Montreal) division served in
the House of Commons for 21
years, the first Jewish member
to be elected. The story is told
that Jacobs was summoned in
1915, to attend the Liberal Ad-
visory Council meeting in Otta-
wa. Sir Wilfred Laurier, Prime
Minister of Canada, was very
favorably impressed with the
high order of Mr. Jacobs' abil-
ities and an instant liking
sprang up between the two men
that later ripened into affec-
tion. A man of great wit, Jacobs
could move a jaded audience to
good humor and laughter. Born
in Lancaster, Ontario, on May 6,
1871, he was the son of Mr. and
Mrs. William Jacobs. He died
at 67 after bringing honour to
Canadian Jewry through his per-
sonal achievements as a Jurist
and Parliamentarian.
