Hyam Bernstein was the first Jewish farmer to settle on the soil in Canada. He came from Kovno, Lithuania, to farm outside Syracuse, N.Y., where he remained for 10 years be- fore settling in Lachute, Que- bec, in 1882. There, for one year, he had a little store which served as headquarters for the Jewish peddlers of that area. Although he was a Hebrew scholar, and from a family given to study, he believed that the Jews should be productive on the soil. Despite the fact that he had no agricultural training or skill, he again took up farming at Gore, seven miles from Lachute in absolutely virgin country in 1883, three years before we heard of John Heppner, the pioneer Jewish farmer, who settled on a farm near Wapella in the West. Bernstein, who was an en- thusiastic Zionist, remained in this Scotch settlement of Gore, until 1888, when he came to Montreal to become one of the founders of the Canadian Zion- ist movement. With no Jewish neighbors, he brought up a family on the farm at Gore. To this day, a creek running through this land is called "Bernstein Creek." A cradle brought from Scot- land, in which the Bernstein children were rocked, was later sold to, and is still in the pos- session of, the Rogers family, of Lachute, well known in Canadian politics. Hyam Bernstein brought his nephews (the sons of his sis- ter), Asher Pierce and Charles Pierce, from Lithuania. They left a life of ease to stay with their uncle, and later, became instrumental in bringing many JeWish farmers to Oxbow, in Western Canada, in that part of the Northwest Territories, which later became Saskat- chewan. Charles Pierce was to become one of the first citizens and founders of Timmins, Ont., which was then only "green grass" with no promise of the gold mines that became famous. The son of Asher Pierce, Sid- ney Pierce, O.B.S., is now Can- adian Ambassador in Belgium. The children of Hyam Bern- stein contributed greatly to Jewish development. A daugh- ter, Mrs. N. Mrs. Louis Fitch (Minnie), born in Gore, Que- bec, Micah, born in Lachute, and Benjamin Bernstein, Q.C., all live in Montreal. A grand- son, Ben Blue, of Hollywood, is a famous comedian.
