THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS — Friday, April 8, 1960 — 10 Campers Elect Stanley Michaels Election of Detroiter Stanley J. Michaels as president-elect of the 50-year-old American Camp- ing Association, was announced this week by Hugh Ransom, ACA executive director. Michaels will serve a two-year term as president, beginning in March 1961, when he is in- stalled as 16th national presi- dent of the association. The ACA represents 8,000 members in 3,000 indi- vidual camps from coast to coast. Owner a n .d director of Camp Nahelu, near Orton- e, Mich., Michaels is a member of the advisory board of the Michaels Girl Scouts of Metropolitan Detroit, a director of the Metropolitan Savings and Loan, for six years was a board member of the Fresh Air Soci- ety and is active in many other communal causes. From 1952-57, he was chair- man of the national standards committee of the ACA, and was instrumental in initiating the nation-wide camp standards pro- gram, a project of periodic vis- itation and inspection of facil- ities of member camps. In accepting office, Michaels stated, "Camping today has be- come a dynamic influence in the well-rounded education of our youth. Camping is fun with a purpose.
