resentatives of Jewish organiza-
tions delivered major addresses
before the Assembly of the
1960 White House Conference
on Children and Youth which is
attended by 7,000 delegates
from 550 national American

JERUSALEM — The Knesset
rejected Wednesday, by a vote
of 60 to 24, a General Zionist
motion of non-confidence in Pre-
mier Ben-Gurion's government
over the long simmering secon-
dary school education crisis.
There were six abstentions.
The crisis, which involved a
struggle over teacher union rec-
ognition and higher pay levels,
led to the resignation of Zal-
man Aranne as Minister of
Education.
All members of the coalition
government voted against " the
non-confidence m o t i o n•. The
right wing Herut Party sup-
ported the General Zionists.
The Communists and the ultra-
orthodox Agudat ISrael ab-
stained.
The General Zionists, who
supported the Prime Minister
in t h e Communist - sponsored

meeting with West German
Chancellor • Konrad Adenauer,
expressed regret that the Prime
Minister was unable to per-
suade members of the Mapai,
his own party, to accept
Aranne's recommendations in
the school dispute. It was on
this issue that he resigned.

Addressing the gathering, Al
Borman recalled his personal
struggles before acquiring the
blessings of Americanism and
declared:
"The Greater Detroit area
has been -awfully good to Al
Borman and his brother, Tom,
since we began working to-
gether i n that first little
grocery store on Twelfth
Street in this city.
"It is only right that we
should try to show our appre-
ciation when the opportunity
presents itself. We feel that
this contribution to education-
al facilities of schools in the
area is the best way to say
`thank you.' "
Among those accepting the
gifts in behalf of religious
schools, in addition to Rabbi
Hertz, who accepted for the
Jewish schools, were E. F.
Wiese, assistant superintendent
of Lutheran schools, and Fr.
John Zwers, for the Catholic
Archdiocese.
Two types of the Encyclo-
pedia Britannica were given to
the schools. The senior set of
24 volumes in red and royal
binding that retail at $403 a
set are intended for the high
schools, while the junior sets of
15 volumes that retail at $154.90
a set, will be used in the ele-
mentary schools.
The retail value of the gift
to Detroit's public and parochial
schools is more than $26,000.
The average retail value of the
sets going to the smaller com-
munities is $2,000.
