Rabbinate Protests
'Rose Sculpture Garden;
Fights . Prayer Change

JERUSALEM • - The Chief
Rabbinate announced opposition
to - the projected Jerusalem
Sculpture Garden especially de-
signed for the million dollar
collection from Billy Rose.
A Rabbinate - Council spokes-
man said the - project is "con-
trary to the . spirit of Judaism
and constitutes a profanation
of the nate. and character of
the Holy City.". The Rabbinate
called on the Jerusalem Muni-
cipal Council to frustrate the
-plan "before it is too late."
The Municipality; which is the
licensing authority-for construc-
tions, approved a plan for the
garden at the projected site,
but this was. unrelated to a
later - plan of • the American
showman to donate : his famous
collection. : .
The Chief Rabbinate Council
also adopted a resolution stat-
ing it saw no reason to amend
the existing text of -a memorial
prayer for the holocaust vic-
tims. The council had been
asked by the Minister of Reli-
gious Affairs, Rabbi Jacob
Toledano to reexamine the text
at the suggestion of President
Ben-Zii, who proposed that the
phrase "German murderers" be
Changed to "Nazi German mur-
derers."
