Is Latest Jew in House to Mark 10th Anniversary

WASHINGTON, (JTA)—Rep.
Jacob H. Gilbert, a new United
States Congressman of the Jew-
ish faith, began duties as a
Democratic member of the
House of Representatives from
New York. Rep. Gilbert was
elected on Marc' - 8 to finish the
term of Isidore Dollinger who
resigned from Congress to be-
come the Bronx District Attor-
ney.,
Rep. Gilbert, who served in
Albany, as a State Senator, an-
nounced that he would work for
civil rights and other liberal
causes in Washington. He was
introduced to the House by Rep.
Emanuel Celler, New York
Democrat, and was sworn in by
Speaker of the House Sam Ray-
burn of Texas.

LONDON, (JTA ) —The Soviet
Union has stopped jamming
Hebrew broadcasts being trans-
mitted to Russia ')y the British
Broadcasting Corporation's
European service, according to
an announcement by BBC here.
As a result 't lifting the
Soviet jamming_ operations,
BBC stated, its Hebrew broad-
casts to Russia are now being
picked up. in the Soviet Union
"much better" than they used
to be heard. .
The London Daily Telegraph
reported that the Arabic-lan-
guage broadcasts of the Voice
of Israel are chaLenging the
Arabic service of the British
Broadcasting COrporation for
first place among Arab listen-
ers. It said that President Nas-
ser's radio network, spanning
the Arab world at a cost of
$14,000,000 a year, had been
beaten back to third place in
audience attention.
The Israel government has
been so encouraged by the re-
sults of its Arabic-language
broadcast operations, the news-
paper said, that it planning
to put a new medium-wave
transmitter at • the disposal of
Kol Israel for Arabic broad-
casts later this year.
