JERUSALEM—Damage to Is-
raeli crops from the current
dry spell already totals 12,000,-
000 pounds and may reach 20,-
000,000 if rains do not come
soon, a spokesman for the Is-
rael Treasury reported Wednes-
day..
He said interim relief for the
stricken areas of 3,500,000
pounds would be granted in
form of lower water rates and
subsidized grain prices.
The Ministry of Agriculture
reported that the hardest hit
was the Negev, where 50,000
acres of crops were already
lost. In other parts of the
country, 10,000 acres had been
crippled.
Hundreds of Orthodox Jews
prayed for rain at the Honi
Hameaggel Tomb near Tel Aviv.
Prayers for rain also were of-
fered at services on Mount Zion
and the Caves of Sanhedrin in
Jerusalem.
(Honi Hameaggel—"Honi the
circle-drawer"— a pious man of
the first century, received hig
name from an incident during
a drought period. According to
the legend when all prayers for
rain went unanswered, he man-
aged to produce rainfall by
drawing a circle on the ground
and vowing to inside of it
until rain come.)
The drought this year is the
worst ever recorded and the
third successive dry year. Most
of Israel's field crops appear to
be irretrievably lost. Orchards
may still be saved if the rains
come, but the yields will be far
below normal.
Many Orthodox Jews have
come to Safed, home of the
Cabbalists, to participate in
pecial.ipray4gs as the contInu-
ing parching 'not only imperiled
the whole winter crop but also
could prevent preparation of
fields for summer crops.

WASHINGTON, (JTA) —

York Republican, introduced
a bill in the House to create
a U.S. postage stamp in the
"champions of liberty"
series, commemorating the
100th aniversary of the birth
of Theodor Herzel.
The issue would be con-
current with the celebration
of Dr. Herz 1' s centennial
year. Rep. Halpern said the
name of the Zionist pioneer
would occupy a place side
by side with such liberators
as Bolivar, Kossuth. and San
Martin.

PHILADELPHIA, (JTA) —
Gertrude Berg apologized last
week for making a reference
to the "Hanukah Bush" in an
appearance on the Ed Sullivan
television program last Decem-
ber for which she was sharply
criticized in the Detroit Jewish
News and other English-Jewish
periodicals.
In a letter to the
Exponent, Miss Berg said
said she
was "telling a. story and not
giving a lecture on the signifi-
cance of Hanukah or Christ-
; mas" and that her story re-
* ferred to an incident which
happened 30 years ago.
"Had I had the opportunity
to lecture, I should have point-
, ed out, that had there been no
Maccabees and no victory over
the Syrians, there might have
been no Christ and no Christ-
mas." she wrote. "But I did
'manage to call attention to the
fact that in our religion we do
not celebrate Christmas but
Hanukah."
She added that "I regret now
that I told the story, in spite
of the great number of letters
of commendation" she received
"from Jew and Gentile. I feel
that, even if only one Jew is
offended, it would have been
better not to have told the
story."

TEL AVIV. (JTA)—Several
leaders of a small ultra-national-
ist group of Israel Arabs whose
slogan was reported to be "Nas-
ser is our Ben-Gurion" were de-
tained and their periodical sus-
pended after extensive agitation
against Israel authorities.
The group, with headquarters
in Nazareth, split off recently
from an earlier Arab group
formed several years ago under
the name "Popular Front"
which called for bettering the
conditions of Israel's Arab mi-
nority.

of designs drawn from our historic past

Just in time for your spring decorating plans—
Hudson's brings you this exciting new group
of fabrics. Inspired by cherished 19th century
designs as shown in Dearborn's Greenfield
Village—perhaps by a colorful Shaker carpet,
an English dress fabric, an array of unusual
shipping labels—these fabrics are beautifully
suited to draperies, slip covers, bedspreads.
