Premier in U.S. to Get Degree Dag Extends B-G Invitation to Talk on. M id-East Unrest Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News JERUSALEM — When Israeli Prime Minister David Ben- Gurion comes to' the United States next week to accept an honorary degree from Brandeis University, on Wednesday, he also will pay a visit to Dag Hammarskjold, at the personal invitation of the UN Secretary General. Published reports in the Is- raeli press also hint at a courtesy call by Ben-Gurion at the White House and possible meetings with German Chancel- lor Konrad Adenauer, who will be in the country at the same time. The Premier's visit here will be the first he has made since he came to the U.S. in May, 1951, to inaugurate the first Israel Bond drive. Although Ben-Gurion's complete plans re- main uncertain, it is hoped by Jewish leaders that he will find time to address a mass meeting in New York. .Authoritative sources here emphasized that the sole pur- pose of Ben-Gurion's trip was to receive the degree of Doctor of Laws, from Brandeis Univer- sity, at Waltham, Mass. He will speak on "Science and Ethics— The Contributions of Greece, India and • Israel." Mrs. Ben- Gurion will accompany her hus- band. The invitation to the Israel Prime Minister by Hammarsk- jold was issued Monday, when the Secretary General learned that Ben-Gurion was coming to the U.S. He sent word to Ben- Gurion that he would hold him- self available for such discus- sions as the Prime Minister might find useful and conven: ient. Tentative plans call for a meeting on Thursday, when Hammarskjold will tender a luncheon in Ben-Gurion's honor. The meeting might be held at the UN or at Hammarskjold's estate at Brewster, about 30 miles out of the city. The UN Correspondents As- sociation cabled Ben-Gurion in- viting him to an association luncheon in his honor on March 11 or any other day convenient to him. In Washington, meanwhile, the White House advised that no definite appointment has yet been established for Ben-Gurion to meet with President Eisen- I hower, but they "assume it will be." - A United Nations observer commented Monday night on the cordiality shown in the an- nouncement of Hammarskjold's invitation to Ben-Gurion. (The New York Times de- scribed the invitation Tuesday as "an effort to renew personal contacts with the Premier on many of the long existing Arab- Israeli differences. Outstanding among these are Cairo's refusal to let Israeli shipping through the Suez Canal and seizure of Israeli cargoes.")
