National Drive Total
Reaches $1,250,000
NEW YORK, (JTA) — More
than $1,25Q000 in cash was pre-
sented here for the 1960 Hista-
drut campaign at the mid-win-
ter national conference of the
National Committee for Labor
Israel which conducts the cam-
paign. The 1960 goal of the
drive is $5,000,000.
Charles Zimmerman, chair-
man of the board of the NCLI,
reported at the conference that
the AFL-CIO and the Histadrut
are jointly sponsoring an Insti-
tute of Labor Studies for Asian
and African trade union lead-
ers which will be established
soon in Tel Aviv. Courses would
include administrative tech-
niques, collective bargaining
and economics.
He said that the executive
council of the AFL-CIO approv-
ed the project at its meeting
earlier this month in Bal Har-
bor, Fla. George H. Meany,
president of the AFL-CIO, an-
nounced that the American la-
bor movement would provide
half of the scholarships, costing
$175,000, for the first year of

Ordered 300 Jews
to Death, Ex-Nazi
Officer Admits
BERLIN, (JTA) — A former
Nazi officer testified this week
at his trial in the shooting of
300 Jews in the Ukraine in
1942 that he had ordered
the killings out of fear that if
he had refused to do so, he
himself would have been exe-
cuted.
Alois Huelsduenker, 68, said
that as chief of the Nazi
security police post in Berdit-
chev, he had been ordered to
liquidate the 300 Jews in the
camp.
Asserting that he knew he
was participating in a crime,
he said: "In my anguish I
thought of my wife and six
children at home. If I had re-
fused to execute the order, I
would have been put before a
special court myself and sen-
tenced to death by shooting."
