Proposal Rejected by Syria
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — Secretary of State Christian Herter indicated to
a press conference that the United States continued to look to the United Nations
for a solution to the Suez Canal controversy involving the transit of Israeli cargo.
The Secretary commented on what the United States was doing to imple-
ment President Eisenhower's 1957 assurances to Israel on Suez Canal transit. He
said the United States had made a number of strong statements on the transit issue.
Herter pointed out that Dag -Hammarskjold, UN Secretary General. was
currently making an effort to find a solution and said that maybe Hammarskjold
would still come up with a modus viyendi.
Israeli Proposal for MAC Discussions Rejected by Syria

JERUSALEM — The Syrian representative on the Israel-Syrian Mixed Ar-
mistice Commission formally rejected Monday a proposal from Israel to discuss
measures for the I'estoration of peaceful conditions in the demilitarized zone near
Lake Tiberias.
The representative made Syria's position known to the chairman of the
MAC. declaring that Syria was not willing to take part in such talks as long as
Israel refuses to discuss the status of the demilitarized zone, scene of sharp fight-
ing for more than a week.
Israel has consistently taken the position that the demilitarized zone is com-
pletely within Israel territory. and that Syria therefore has no claims to the zone
and cannot participate in talks on a mat ter which Israel considers as solely one
between Israel and the UN.

derway in 3.500 communities across the nation. including Detroit. announced that Sunday's
total of starting gifts is 11 percent greater than the amount UJA received a year ago.
An outstanding gift of S250.000 toward the UJA 1960 Special Fund was made by Mrs.
Moses I.. Annenberg. of New York. It was announced at the request of her son Walter An-
nenberg. Philadelphia publisher.

Ground Broken for New Hebrew Schools
Building; Made Po'ssible by . $60,000 •

A $60.000 gift from Al and Toni Borman is enabling the construction
of a new branch of the United Hebrew Schools on the southeast corner of
Seven Mile Road and Bentler. Albert Elazar, superintendent of the United He-
brew Schools. announced this week.
Ground for the new eight-classroom building has already been broken, and
the new building is expected to be ready for occupancy in September.
The $60,000 gift by the Bormans is being matched in an equal amount by
the capital needs committee of the Jewish Welfare Federation. The land for the
building was provided by the United Jewish Charities.
The building committee of the United Hebrew Schools. which is in charge
of the project, is under the chairmanship of David Safran, and includes Louis
Schostak, Jack Shenkman and Mandell L. Berman, president of the schools. Abe
Kasle assisted in completing arrangements fOr the new building project.
Elazar stated that there is a large Jewish child population in the Evergreen
area in which the new school will be located. He said that at present 200 children
from this area are being transported in -UHS buses to the Berman branch of the
schools, and that a large number of additional children is certain to be enrolled
in the new school when it is completed in September.
