Educational Values of Allied Campaign
Allied :Jewish Campaign workers al-
ready are engaged in the serious task of
securing the funds that are so urgently
needed to carry on rescue work overseas
and Israel's upbuilding, through the
United Jewish Appeal; and for the sup-
port and maintenance of the important
local educational and social service efforts
and the many national causes that are
aided with the income from our annual
drives.
A splendid beginning has been an-
nounced, at the traditional "Sucher Meet-
ing" held last week. and there is reason
to hope that last year's income will be ex-
ceeded—the need being exceedingly great
in view of increased local obligations and
because it is so vital that the United
Jewish Appeal's activities should not be
handicapped by a lack of funds.

To assure the success of the Allied
.Jewish Campaign, it will be necessary not
only to continue the pattern set at the
"Sucher Meeting" of securing increases
over last year's giving from many con-
tributors, but also to enlist the coopera-
tion of many hundreds—possiblv thous-
ands—of our fellow citizens who have not
contributed in the past. It will be neces-
sary to enroll many more young people
whose giving must play an important role
in our campaign.
For this purpose, it is vital that the
objectives of the drive should be widely
known, and: that there should be complete
understanding in our community of the
values inherent in the more than 50 causes
represented in the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign. To attain such an objective. it is
necessary that an educational campaign
on the aims of the agencies benefiting
from the drives should accompany the
solicitations.

Award to Judge Levin
There will be general acclaim of the
announcement that Judge Theodore Levin
has been awarded the 1960 Fred M. Butzel
Memorial Award. Non-Jews as well as
Jews will applaud the selection. because
the eminent jurist has been active, for
more than 40 years, not only in Jewish
communal affairs • but also in the major
_civic movements of our city.
He began his activities in the Bnai
Brith, has been active in social service
movements, has served as president of the
.Jewish Welfare Federation, and is pres-
ently the chairman of its executive com-
mittee.
On and off the bench he lends glory
to Jewry and to our country. Like the man
in whose memory the award is being
given annually—Fred M. Butzel, who was
his mentor—Judge Levin serves our peo-
ple and our country well.

Bigotry s Spearhead
Realistic analysts must recognize that
Arab propaganda against Israel, and the
accompanying support it received from
non-Jewish quarters in this country, con-
tributed towards the • spread of anti-Sem-
itism throughout the world.
For more than a decade, unholy
alliances conspired to destroy Israel. Com-
munist forces were aligned with extreme
rightists in attacks on Jews everywhere
under the cloak of anti-Zionism.
Those who propagandized against the
right of Jews to freedom in their ancient
homeland are as guilty of the current
wave of anti-Semitism as the neo-Nazis
who have raised their ugly heads in the
revival of hatred in Germany.
Those who begrudge the Jews who

Mennen Williams of Michigan
Frank McNaughton has .written an interesting biographical
sketch of our Governor under the title "Mennen Williams of
Michigan: Fighter for Progress." It has just been published
by Oceana Publications, 80 ttt.1:, N.Y. 3.
As the title of the book indicated. the author's approach is
favorable, and Williams comes through the ordeal of being
diagnosed with flying colors.
McNaughton's biographical sketch is especially interesting in
his description of Williams' development as a liberal in an
atmosphere of Republicanism. Equally interesting is the
biographer's evaluation of the Governor's harnessing of talent.
In all these aspects, tribute is paid to Williams' good judgments.
his sense of fair play, his devotion to duties.
There is an interesting reference to Arnold J. Levin , one-
time Detroit News correspondent. Describing Williams' experi-
ences with Levin, McNaughton states: "Levin today is the press

The biographer goes into considerable detail in describing
