Jewry's Strength
Lies in Culture,
Dr. Grayzel Says

"Jews survive because of
their culture and their spiritual
gifts, and losing these, they lose
everything," Dr. Solomon Gray-
zel, editor of the Jewish Pub-
lication Society of America,
stated in his address here Wed-
nesday before the Men's Club
of Shaarey Zedek.
In his analysis of conditions
that affect Jewry's existence
today, Dr. _Grayzel declared
that the real question for the
survival of Jewry is "how we
will control the cultural forces
that lie within our power."
"In this serious time in our
history, we can so build up our
spiritual strength that it should
enable us to rise up to it," he
stated.
Evaluating Jewish publishing
efforts, Dr. Grayzel stated that
the Jewish Publication""Society
aims to provide Jewry not with
books "Jews want but with
books they need for their cul-
tural advancement. He stated
that if readers were to indicate
a demand for the best -literature,
they would in the course of- time
also secure better novels.
Arthur Lang introduced the
speaker. Murray Jacobs, presi-
dent of the Sharrey Zedek
Men's Club, greeted the gather-
ing. George Parzen was chair-
man of the program arrange-
ments committee.

The Big Enigma

Is anti-SemitiSm in the pres-
ent form snowballing spontane-
ously, each new incident "in-
spiring" another group of latent
anti-Jewish elements? . . . That
really is the crux of the pres-
ent situation and the sooner
we will find an authentic an-
swer the sooner we will be able
to deal with - the lamentable
conditions. . . .

It appears beyond the shadow
of a doubt that the beginning
of the series of desecrations of
Jewish places can be pinpointed
to Germany . . . It is an open
secret that Germany, today, al-
though enjoying a democratic .
government, has not rid itself
of Nazi influences . . . Many,
too many, key positions in state
and municipal government are
held by Nazis, who somehow
managed to get themselves
whitewashed but are still re-
taining their Nazi ideology . .•
A short column such as ours
does not allow us to enumerate
the names of influential Nazis
who are playing an important
role in the Bonn Government.
Yet, it must be- acknowledged
that Adenauer's administration
is honestly opposed to Nazism
and terribly, embarassed by the
so-called revival of anti-Semit-
ism in the land . . . Its security
system is quite efficient we are
told and so is its police organi-

zation
. . We have it from
reliable sources that an inter-
national central office for the
propagation of anti-Semitism
does not exist in Germany . . .
But such headquarters manned
by Hitler fanatics does exist in
Sweden, a country which is
virtually free of anti-Semitism
. . . Yet, as far as we know, no
steps have been undertaken to
smash this anti-Semitic organi-
zation which for the past few
years has been gathering
strength and substantial finan-
cial resources .. . Jewish lead-
ers speak in veiled language
about an international conspir-
acy but fail to point to the
source of this hate manifesta-
tion . . We wonder why . .

organ, "Zafer."
The editorial criticizes the
International Bank for Recon-
struction and Development for
its decision to lend $56,000,000
to the UAR for widening of
the canal.

. . . Such a statement con-
demning anti-Jewishness would
have made a powerful impres-
sion throughout the world . .
Besides it might also -have put
a dent into the enthusiastic
reaction of the Arab govern-
ments who openly proclaim
their joy at the revival of anti-

Hanukah Bush Editorial
Endorsed by Goldoftas

Editor, The Jewish News:
Your comments in The Jew-
ish News, Jana 1, "The Shame
of Uninformed Oracles," were
the right words at the right
time. I - felt ashamed and de-
pressed when I read and heard
abdut the new discovery of a
"'Hanukah Bush," as a compro-
mise by the grandfather to his
grandchildren. What a misrep-
resentation of our beautiful his-
torical holiday!
Your comments about Hanu-
kah and Christmas were based
on original Jewish historical
sources and enlighten the mean-
ing of Hanukah. How ashamed
can an actor be of his own
religion to show to the public
an idea of grandfather's "Han-
ukah BuSh!"
It is unfortunate that more
and .more Jewish parents are
inclined to compromise in this
field, thinking that by- giving
their youngsters a combined
Hanukah-Christmas celebration,
that they have achieved some-
thing for their children and that
this is the "right" kind of edu-
cation. I witnessed — and was
greatly shocked—to see a kind
of a "Hanukah Bush" in a few
, homes, where the people con-
sidered themselves "Good Jews"
and even "Good Zionists," as
they contribute to the Zionist
cause. What a mishap! What a
task for Jewish educators, not
only towards the young genera-
tion, but much more -towards
the parents and maybe even
grandparents. How wrong were
we by thinking that a grand-
father is a guarantee, a barrier
towards assimilation. If grand-
parents compromise their grand-
children—where do we go from
here?
I hope that your comments
will arouse many families to
think more about this. They can
be used in many clubs and
branches and especially at P.
T. A. meetings- as a good source
of information and enlightening
of the subject.
Thanking you for publishing
this article, I remain
Sincerely yours,
