A five-year study delineating, a nine-point program for effec- tively combating the profes- sional bigot and rabble-rouser has been issued by the Ameri- can Jewish Committee. Entitled "Deflating the Pro- fessional Bigot," the pamphlet shows that the most successful way to defeat a bigot is the "quarantine method," which de- nies unwarranted publicity to the hatemonger. The following are the nine basic principles of this method: I. The quarantine method stresses that no one is to be pressured. Furnishing information and explain- ing the harmful results of adver- tising the troublemaker are the only permissible steps in dealing with the press, radio and television. 2. Do not debate the bigot's state- ments. It only strengthens his abil- ity to deal in specious generalizing. 3. No matter how defamatory a bigot's statements, suing him for libel, even though successful, af- fords publicity and "martyrdom" which more than compensate for monetary punishment. 4. Publicity can be effective if it unmasks those persons of "re- spectability" who secretly help bigots. It can likewise be used where a bigot is purposefully con- cealing facts about himself. 5. Competent community rela- tions organizations should observe the activities of hatemongers and furnish adequate information to friendly inquirers. 6. Those who know a bigot is coining should privately expose him to opinion-molders. 7. After a rabble-rouser has rented a hall there should be no public argument about it. If can- celling provides a legitimate griev-. Mrs. Olender Dead; Was Detroiter 45 Years A Detroit resident for 45 years, Mrs. Rose Olender, of 17333 Wildemere, died Jan. 12. Born in Poland. Where authorities who control the use of public property, such as a school auditorium, have an established right to reject undesir- able applicants, exclusion of the bigot is in order. But if the prop- erty is available to everyone he should be given the hall. 9. If the bigot or his literature is being promoted in the community, the situation should be used con- structively to interest more people in projects for improving intergroup relations.
