American Savings
Assets Have Grown
to Over 100 Million

largest savings
and loan asso-
ciation in
Michigan, and
A. Deutsch _ also Michi-
gan's largest state chartered
savings and loan association.
American Savings current
statement shows savings shares
rose to $84,368,191, a gain of
$9,993,551 since Dec. 31, 1958.
Reserves have increased to
$5,223,059 and American Sav-
ings has invested $86,355,897 in
first mortgage loans including
FHA and VA government in-
sured mortgages.
The association's 25th semi-
annual dividend, amounting to
$1,337,280 is currently being dis-
tributed to all shareholders.
Officers of American Savings
include, besides Deutsch: Sam-
uel Hechtman, senior vice-presi-
dent and chairman of the board;
Alfred L. Deutsch, executive
vice-president; Jack Sylvan, sen-
ior vice-president; Nathan I.
Goldin, secretary - treasurer;
Fred J. Ruelle and George M.
Zeltzer, vice-presidents.
The association recently open-
ed its eighth branch on Tele-
graph Road at Maple in Bloom-
filed, Mich.

Panel at Center Monday

discussion for Older Adults. of
the Jewish Center, at 1:30 p.m.,
Monday.

Betrothal Told

Three Detroiters have been named to committees planning
the 1960 biennial convention of the National Jewish Welfare
Board. Samuel H. Rubiner and Irwin Shaw were named members
of the convention committee and Isadore Sobeloff was appointed
a member of the program committee.
Mr. and Mrs. Saul Fleishman, of Fullerton Ave., and Louis
Lover, of Stoepel Ave., were among the 1,000 people who at-
tended the Mister Softee Convention in Hollywood Beach, Fla.
In celebration of the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and
Mrs. Harry Cohen, a dinner will be given in their honor on Sunday
by their children, Mr. and Mrs. Louis J. Cohen, Mr. and Mrs. Abe
Cohen, Mr. and Mrs. Fred •Weinstein and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur
Feldman.
Mr. and Mrs. Morris Pearl (Janet Lorraine Jackson, of De-
troit) and daughter, Nancy Sue, are now residing in their new

Miss Jacobs is a graduate of
Wayne State University's col-
lege of education and is now
teaching in the Livonia Public
Schools. The bridegroom-elect
is a graduate of Northern Illi-
nois' college of optometry. The
wedding is planned for Feb. 28.

Ask for Volunteers
for Mothers' March

An urgent appeal was issued
for additional volunteers to par-
ticipate in the Mothers' March
against crippling birth defects,
arthritis and polio.
-The traditional house-to-house
solicitation, which climaxes the
appeal of the New March of
i Dimes for 1960, will be held in
1Wayne County Jan. 28, starting
at 7. p.m.
Women who wish to join
the Mothers' March are asked
to call the Mothers' March at
New March of Dimes head-
I quarters at WO 1-4153.
The first full-scale attack on
crippling birth defects, Amer-
ica's largest unmet childhood
medical problem, will be sup-
ported by the New March of
Dimes campaign in Wayne
County this month.
Charles L. Gehringer, county
campaign director, said that
with contributions to the New
March of Dimes, the National
Foundation will pursue a broad
program of medical research,
patient aid and professional
education aimed at preventing
birth defects (congenital mal-
formations) and providing
patient aid for children born
with certain defects of the skull
and spine.

Schuster to Solo
with Symphony

Joseph Schuster, noted cellist,
will be soloist with the Jewish
Community Center Symphony
Orchesti°a, under the direction
of Julius Chajes, at 8:30 p.m.,
Tuesday, at

Schuster has
made six tours
of Europe and
Central and
South Ameri-
ca, in addition
to his annual
coast - to-coast
appearances in
Schuster
the United States. Recently, he
also played In Israel. He has
performed with such major
symphony . orchestras, here and
abroad, as the New York Phil-
harmonic and Berlin Philhar-
monic, and under such celebrat-
ed conductors as Toscanini,
Walter, Mitropoulus, Rodzinski
and Furtwaengler.
This will be Schuster's second
appearance with the Center
Symphony Orchestra.
The program will include
Smetana's Overture "The Bar-
tered Bride" and Brahms' Sec-
ond Symphony. The concert is
the second in the series of Tues-
day evening concerts.

Detroit Sisters Set
for Three Concert

Two Detroit sisters, currently
studying at the Eastman School
of Music in Rochester, N.Y.,
will make three January con-
cert appearances, including one
in Mt. Clemens.
They are Joyce and Joanne
Weintraub, daughters of Mr.
and Mrs. Joseph Weintraub, of
19035 Parkside.
The young pianists will play
this Sunday, in Rochester, un-
der sponsorship of Sigma
Alpha Iota, international music
sorority, with proceeds going
to the sorority's scholarship
fund.
A second appearance in Ro-
chester is planned for Jan. 23,
when the sisters will be solo-
ists with the Rochester Civic
Orchestra; Arthur Fidler con-
ducting.
Joanne and Joyce will be in
Mt. Clemens on Jan. 30, when
they will appear with the Mt.
Clemens Symphony. Several
other engagements are planned
for later in the spring, includ-
ing a recital in March at Vassar
College.
