Pub- lished by Jonathan David (85 Division, N. Y.), this splendid story by Freda Charles, well illustrated by Lil Goldstein, has a charming Hanukah angle. However, the entertaining story is suitable for children for the entire year. It is a story about eight little girls and their parents, their Sabbath observance, their pre- paration for Hanukah, the Chalahs they enjoy on the Sab- bath and the retention of the family tradition of using two Chalahs on Sabbath and festi- val. The children's assistance to their mother, their cooperative home spirit; the parental care and the sisterly ardor-all help to make this a tale with real warmth. Young children will relish this tale. The author, daughter of Sam- uel M. Shapiro, who was the editor of the Toronto Daily He- brew Journal, had a fine Jewish background, enabling her to write a truly fine Jewish story. She is now director of arts and crafts at the Toronto Holy Blossom Temple. The illustrator is art instructor at the Brandeis School in Far Rockaway, N. I., (JTA)-A decision to drop recitation of the Lord's Prayer from school assembly programs will be reviewed 'as a result of a meeting of parents at which many participants strongly pro- tested against the omission of the religious prayer, it was an- nounced by Eugene Worcester, president of the Board of Edu- cation. Nearly 300 persons attended the meeting at which the issue was debated. The meeting was called after widespread . divi- sions within the comm-unity de- veloped on the matter. Wor- cester said that board mem- bers had not ordered a ban specifically on the Lord's Prayer but on "all sectarian and denominational" prayers. Booming Port Washington has 5,000 children in its high Congress Criticized for Postponement in Civil Rights Action school, two junior high and six elementary schools. The practice of opening high school assemblies with the Lord's Prayer had not been questioned until last winter when Supreme Court Justice Bernard S. Meyer ruled that the daily reciting of the New York state-authorized prayer of the Board of Regent in nearby Her- rick should not be made man- datory. The Board of Regents is recited regularly in Port Washington elementary schools with the pledge of allegiance.
