`Song of Songs' in New Translation
by Schonfield Out in Paperback
"The Song of Songs" in a new
translation by Hugh J. Schon-
field, the British scholar, has
been released by the New Am-
erican Library of World Litera-
ture (501 Madison, N. Y. 22),
in an original Mentor paper-
bound edition.
In his foreword, Dr. Schon-
field calls "the Matchless or
Incomparable Song", which is
what the Hebrew title means,"
one of the glories of the Bible,
though many through the cen-
turies have shaken pious heads
disapprovingly over the pres-
ence in the sacred Scriptures
of such a frank love poem."
Dr. Schonfield, an English
scholar in Greek, Hebrew, La-
tin, Biblical history and Jewish
customs, the translator of Men-
tor's "The Authentic New
Testament," and author of Men-
tor's "The Bible Was Right",
believes that the song is "a
work of art, which has captured
in words the untrammelled bu-
colic beauty of an Eastern vil-
lage wooing, utilizing the tra-
ditional folk material which had
its origin in primitive rites de-
voted to the mating of Sun and
Earth, or of seed and soil, and

that in its theme there is noth-
