THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS -- Friday, Janu ary 8, 19 60- 12

First Volume of 'Great Jewish Personalities' Inaugurates New Bnai Brith Publications

Bnai Brith Great Book Series,
hailed as a pioneering effort in
publishing important informa-
tive books for adults, was inaug-
urated this
week with the
publication by
Farrar, Straus
& Cudahy of
the first vol-
ume in the
series—"Great
Jewish Perso
nalities in An-
cient and Me-
dieval Times,"
edited by Dr.
Simon Noveck :
Bnai Brith'E
director of ad- Dr. Noveck
ult Jewish education.

The editor of this important
series draws a distinction be-
tween those "who feel that his-
torical changes are due mainly
to the underlying social and
economic forces at work in a
particular era" and the views
of scholars who "insist that
strong leaders' have a determ-
ining influence on the course of
human affairs."
"Whatever the pros and cons
on this question," Rabbi No-
veck states, "in Jewish his-
tory great personalities have
often played important roles.
. . Prophets, sages, philos-
ophers and teachers of Juda-
ism have exerted unusual in-
fluence. A knowledge of their
deeds and thoughts can shed
light on Jewish history and
give us insight into the ideals
of Judaism."
In • the Bnai Brith series, it
is planned to present the
achievements of 24 personalities
