Addressing the World Zion- ist Actions committee, he said that while Jews more than any other people were praying for an end to the cold war and for permanent peaceful coexistence, the trend was "full of dangers for us. The atmosphere of con- ciliation influences the attitude of both blocks toward Israel's enemies." . He said that the latest UN General Assembly resolution on the Arab refugees, which re- vived the 1948 Palestine Concil- iation Commission, was "the worst of any adopted in recent years." He cited also the dis- regard of the great powers for the United Arab Republic block- ade to Israel of the Suez Canal and the World Bank loan to the UAR as indicating that "pos- sibly even greater difficulties are waiting ahead." He argued that if the forth- coming summit meeting was successful, the great powers would try to stabilize the Middle East and that "in any such arrangement, the Soviet Union would have a dominant influ- ence. In view of Russia's great hostility toward Israel, it is difficult to predict how such Middle East settlements could be compatible with Israel's in- terests." If the summit meeting should fail, he said this would mean "not only a reversal of the previous situation, but would also increase world tension which might erupt , in various He said fund raising in Jew- ish communities was losing its emergency character and was emerging as one of the main intruments of cooperation be- tween the communities and Is- rael. He saw as a welcome de- velopment "an increase" in the number of younger leaders in fund-raising organizations and the awakening in Jewish com- munities outside of Israel to the importance of Jewish ed- ucation. Dr. Goldmann warned of "a tendency to concentrate Jewish life around synagogues and to turn Judaism into synagogue worship." He called this "the Jewish version of the Christian churches" and charged that the leaders of synagogue organiza- tions "were developing ambi- tions to turn the synagogue into the center not only of religious life but also of secular matters. This may lead to distortion Of Judaism's true character." He asserted that "making synagogues into the general basis of all Jewish life is the most dangerous form of col- lective assimilation." He re- j e c t e d the identification of Zionism with aliyah and said Announcement has been made of the engagement of Mary Kay Vogelsang to Sanford Kaslow Beerbohm, both of Grand Rap- ids. The bride-to-be is the daugh- ter of Mr. and Mrs. James Vogelsang. Mr. Beerbohm's par- ents are Mr. and Mrs. Saul R. Beerbohm, formerly of Detroit. Both the bride, and bride- groom-elect are graduates of Michigan State University. An August wedding is being planned. More than ever, he said, Israel will have to rely on world Jewry. He denounced Soviet policy, asserting that in Russia it was becoming "increasingly clear that the official policy evidently is the complete assimilation of the Jewish community within its surroundings." He asserted that "fortunately there are in- dications that this discrimina- tion only strengthens the Jew- ish consciousness of Soviet Jews. We are obliged to raise this issue in its full gravity to mobilize world public opinion to help us." He rejected charges that such action constituted aiding the cold war. He called aliyah "a vital part of Zionism," but in- sisted that the entire movement "cannot be identical with hal- utziut or the movement would have to give up the task of mobilizing the support of the Jewish people for Israel." Dr. Goldmann stressed that because of the "special char- acter" of American life, it was the task of the Zionist move- ment, particularly its religious components, to oppose tenden- cies of synagogue organizations to seek the center role in American Jewish life.
