Ex-Nazi Resigns University Post; Deny Application for Citizenship NEW YORK, (JTA) — Dr. Edward V. Sittler, who re- nounced his American citizen- ship in 1939 to broadcast Nazi propaganda and who resigned a teaching post on Long Island after protests, tried to regain his citizenship at a hearing here. He was turned down by the Dr. Edward V. Sittler and his wife are shown in a - Brookville, N. Y., courtroom, after being turned down on his request for reinstatement of his American citizenship. United States Immigration and Naturalization Service on a point of procedure, but he was told he could reapply. He is ex- pected to do so on Jan. 4. As he left the building, a small group of persons shouted at him and one young man told him: "Traitor! You have given up your citizenship while other Americans were killed in gas chambers by Nazis like you." Workers at a nearby wreck- ing project stopped work to boo Dr. Sittler, who did not reply. The 42-year-old former Nazi party member drove off in a taxi with his British-born wife. His bid was turned down dur- ing an interview with William Kenville, a naturalization in- vestigator for whom Dr. Sittler filled in forms and answered questions. One of the two char- acter witnesses he brought to the interview was disqualified on a technicality. Dr. Sittler promised to bring a qualified witness and was given permission to apply again on Jan. 4 when his wife also will apply for citizenship. Peter A. Esperdy, district di- rector of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, said that the question of whether or not Dr. Sittler believed in the principles of the United States Constitution would be "the only issue" in considering his peti- tion. Esperdy said that Dr. Sittler's Nazi party membership would not be held against him. Sen. Jacob K. Javits, New York Republican, said mean- while that his investigation of the case was continuing. He said immigration officials had informed him of the circum- stances of a deportation order for Dr. Sittler but that he had not received an explanation of how the former Nazi party member was able to re-enter the United States in 1954. Dr. Sittler's resignation as as- sistant professor at the C. W. Post College of Long Island University in Brookville fol- lowed refusal by the faculty to approve a college administra- tion request for endorsement of the hiring. Dr. Sittler defended himself at the faculty session where the refusal took place. He denied he ever swore allegiance to Hitler, that he knew about Hit- ler's concentration camps or that he had ever acted traitor- ously. He contended he was mis- quoted in an interview with the New York Post which attributed anti-Semitic statements to him. . People Are Saying .. .
