Eddie Cantor's Philosophy of Life
Told in New Book, `The Way I See It'
Eddie Cantor's philosophy of
life is expressed in his new
book, "The Way I See It." pub-
lished by Prentice-Hall (70 5th,
N. Y. 11).
Edited by Phyllis Rosenteur,
the interesting Cantor story
contains his comments on many
problems that affected him and
which are
often faced by
t h e average
person. H i
book is an ac-:
count of a rich
f e, experi- •
enced in har-
mony with his
wife and
daughters. 4>
At the out-
Cantor
set he borrows
from Socrates the viewpoint
that "philosophy is not a search
for the right answers, but a
search for the right questions,"
and he applies it to himself. He
has many opinions and he warns
his readers that "I'm about to
stick my neck out."
He also warns: "I'm selfish,
egotistical and an eager-beaver,"
yet he comes out of it with
flying colors as the good-hearted
person who has made many
people laugh and has brought
happiness into many homes.
Eddie has good words for
his many associates in the
entertainment world. He com-
pliments Dinah Shore and
other celebrities. It is all part
of his "love affair with life."
"In 27 years," he states,
"there hasn't been a time I've
met Jack Benny, George Burns
or George Jessel that we haven't
embraced. With Maurice Cheva-
lier and my oldest non-profes-
sional friend, Arthur Baer, it's
gone on even longer. I love
the guys, so do me something!"
Much of it he ascribes to an-
other of his principles, six
w or d s borrowed from Shake-
speare: "To thine own self be
true . . ." He adds to it his own
philosophy: "It works, when you
know your own true self."
Cantor says much about his
family. He calls marriage the
great experienCe in which .a lot
of people can share with a little
help. He goes off . on a tangent
discussing the intermarriage of
his daughters. Asserting that
"love is the Holy Word." he
repeats what he has said on
other occasions by relating:
"When Irving Berlin an-
nounced his marriage to a
Catholic girl, a Jewish news-
paper asked for my comment.
I said then what I say now.
Religion is love . . . love is the
only religion. My daughter
Janet is married and the mother
of two wonderful kids. Her hus-
band is Robert Gari, a fine
young artist—and a non-Jew. I
can't think of a happier couple."
He even quotes Torah to
prove his point. Does he con-
sider himself a good Jew? To
which he replied: "Why Jew?
I consider myself a pretty good
person." Thus, the old confusion
over intermarriage when he
uses the inapplicable argument:
"Entertaining in a hospital
ward, one doesn't say, 'I wonder
what these guys are?' They're
human beings. That ought to be
enough." Which is the incon-
testable human viewpoint. But
mixed marriages present other
problems, which are not tackled
by Eddie, whose daughter's ex-
perience is sufficient for him.
But there are many tragic inter-
marriages in show business
alone to disprove his argument.
There is an interesting chap-
ter iry his book in which Cantor
lists the names of "All-Time
Greats in Show Business." His
selection follows:
Enrico Caruso, George M.
Cohan, Danny Kaye, Marian
Anderson, Charles Chaplin,
Ed Wynn, Mary Martin, John
Barrymore, Ethel Barrymore,
Jascha Heifetz, Victor Borge,
Fred Astaire, Laurette Taylor,
Al Jolson, Noel Coward, Lu-
cille Ball, Jack Benny, Jimmy
Durante, Groucho Marx, Bob
Hope, Helen Hayes, Maurice
Chevalier, Gertrude Lawr-
ence, Bing Crosby, Will Rog-
ers, Bert Williams, Harry
Lauder, Alfred Lunt and Lynn
Fontaine, Frank Sinatr a,
Sammy Davis Jr., Ethel Mer-
man and George Jessel.
On the whole, Eddie Cantor's
"The Way I See It" is an inter-
esting account of the great en-
tertainer's life and his philoso-
phy of life.
