Hanukah Quiz

Is there any significance to the fact that altogether (not
counting the Shamash candle) there are 36 candles which are
lit on Hanukah?
The Mystics (e.g. Rokeach) contend that the 36 candles rep-
resent the 36 hours in which "the hidden light" shone for Adam
before it was hidden because of his sin. The tiny flames are
thus reminders that the great light of eternity is yet to shine
on humanity and that each time man fights for truth and justice
he comes that much closer to seeing the great light. Others
contend that the 36 candles represent the 36 tractates of the
Talmud. The lights are, therefore, symbolic of the totality of
Jewish learning. This somehow indicates that the struggle for
independence was more than a struggle to preserve life. It was
a struggle to perpetuate the treasure of Jewish learning.

Why is it customary for the women of the household to
refrain from doing any housework while the Hanukah candles
are burning?
According to tradition no use is to be made of the light
that comes from the Hanukah candles. Their purpose is restricted
to the performance of a holy commandment. Some symbol was
needed to indicate that no one may derive any mundane benefit
from the candle light. The fact that the women of the household
refrain from doing any housework was used as an indication
that something in the house was of a nature holy enough to
exclude human use of it. The reason for which the women were
chosen as the ones who would refrain' from work during this
perior is twofold. According to some, it was because the women
of the house would be more apt to make use of the candle light
since they are the ones who do the housework. The other reason is
that it was given as a sign of commendation to the Jewish woman
in general because it was a Jewish heroine (Judith) who accom-
plished a great feat in performing a heroic deed to save her
people. This valor of Jewish womanhood was associated with
the Hanukah festival in which the heroism of the Jewish woman
is recalled in a number of instances.

Why do some authorities insist upon placing the candles
in some kind of holder instead of placing them directly on the
window sill?
The reason given for this requirement is that the miracle
wherein the oil that was to have lasted only one day, and yet
lasted eight days, took place in a vessel which held the oil.
Therefore, it was felt that whatever material was used for the
light of Hanukah should be contained in a vessel symbolic of
the original vessel which. held the oil. •

It it proper to light the Hanukah candles outside the
house instead of in the house?
Actually, originally, the Hanukah candles were lit at the
threshhold so that all the passers-by could see them and be re-
minded of the miracle that occurred in the days of the Maccabees.
In later times however, it became impractical to light the candles
in reach of the passers-by since the Jewish people went through
many eras of violent persecutions and animosities. Thus the
candles were taken inside. In order to attract passers-by, the
' candles are placed on the window sill for all to see. The basic
requirement is to have the candle lit in the home for the family
to see as well as to attempt to have passers-by notice the candles
by placing them near the window sill. Taking them entirely
outside •the house - would thus remove them from the home
and prevent the family from seeing them. It would also precipi-
tate the risk of vandalism which would either blow out the
candles or steal them entirely.

Why are the Hanukah candles kindled before the Sabbath
candles on Friday?
. Kindling the Sabbath candles is traditionally regarded as a
sign of accepting the Sabbath in the home. It would, therefore,
be out of order to kindle the Hanukah candles after the Sabbath
candles since this would be like kindling fire on the Sabbath.
Thus, they must be lit before the Sabbath candles are kindled.
