DAVID

AttAS T ER, Pres.

To buy or not to buy a Renault car? . . . This is the question
now being asked by many Jews throughout the United States
who resent Renault's cancellation of its contract with Israel
under Arab pressure . .. Some of them direct their question to
central Jewish organizations from which they expect guidance
and advice . . . Inquiries on this subject have been received by
the American Jewish Committee as well as by some of the 18
organizations affiliated with the Conference of Presidents . . .
As a result, the Presidents' Conference sent out this week to
its affiliated. organizations a seven-page fact sheet which will
enable the membership of these organizations to receive a full
picture of the "Renault Affair" . . . Similarly, the American
Jewish Committee disseminated a fact sheet which clarifies
the Committee's stand on the Renault move . . . The American
Jewish Committee stresses that the French government remains
one of Israel's best friends . . . At the same time the Committee
p6ints out that the anti-Israel move made by the Renault Com-
pany—which is owned' by the French government—will prob-
ably encourage others to shun traffic with Israel in order to
gain Arab trade . . . The Committee emphasizes that American
companies–like the American Export Line, the Trans-World
Airline and others—do business with both Israel and the
Arab countries and do not yield to Arab boycott pressure
against Israel as did the Renault firm . . . It expresses the
belief that the .Renault Company might possibly have obtained
Arab trade while continuing to deal with Israel, because basical-
ly the Arabs do not enforce the anti-Israel. boycott in instances
where this is economically too harmful . . . Being against any
organized boycott, the American Jewish Committee is against
telling people in this country what cars to buy or not to buy
. . . However, the Committee makes it plain that it feels it
is permissible to explain to anyone the injury being done not
only to Israel but to the Arab countries by encouragement of
tactics which have been depriving the Arabs of the great bene-
fits a proper relationship with Israel would bring . . . Spread-
ing the facts about Renault's yielding to Arab pressure against
Israel is, therefore, considered by the American Jewish Com-
mittee well justified.

Jewish Art

A sculptor from Israel is now attracting wide attention
in the United States . . . He is Nathan Rapoport whose monument
commemorating the 6,000,000 Jews annihilated by the Nazis
has been erected in the Warsaw Ghetto and is now famous
throughout the world . . • Vice President Richard Nixon, who
visited the Warsaw Ghetto during his recent brief stay in
Poland, was impressed with the artistic quality of Rapoport's
monument . . . Impressed with his works also were leading
American art experts who visited an exhibit of his portrait
busts at the Jewish Museum in New York . . . Simultaneously
with the exhibition of his portrait sculpture in New York,
Rapoport won a prize of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine
Art for a sculpture recognized among the best art works at an
exhibit there . . . The Jewish Theological Seminary of America
has commissioned him to make a bust of former Senator Herbert
H. Lehman . . . He is being commissioned by the Club of Polish
Jews in New York to make a bust of Vice-President Nixon, in
appreciation of the latter's visit to the Warsaw Ghetto . • .
He has completed a bust in bronze of Artur Rubinstein, famous
pianist . . . Americans who visited Israel know him also for
his impressive monument on the hill of the Negev kibbutz
"Yad Mordecai," of which he was a member . . . The monument
personifies Mordecai Anielevitcz, leader of the Warsaw Ghetto
uprising, after whom the kibbutz was named .. . Rapoport has
made busts of many. prominent Israelis, including Premier David
Ben-Gurion . . . Born in Poland, he studied art in Italy and
France, and lived in the Soviet Union during World War II as
a refugee from Poland . . . He was repatriated from Russia after
the war, but stirred by news of the birth of Israel, he proceeded
to Israel.

Israel Asks Truce
Chief to Act on
Syrian Provocations

JERUSALEM, (JTA)—Israel
urgently requested last night
that Col. Robert Rickert of the
United States Army, acting
chief of the United States
Truce Organization, act to pre-
vent further Syrian acts of vio-
lence against Israel fishing in
Lake Kineret. The demand fol-
lowed a new Syrian foray Satur-
day night in which the Syrians
slashed beyond repair 120 fish-
ing nets laid near the lake's
eastern shore.
The entire lake is within
Israel territory since Israel
possesses a narrow strip of land
between the lake's eastern shore
and the Syrian border. Israel
permits nearby Syrian villagers
to engage in shore fishing in
the lake and the Syrians have
an approach which they use for
acts of violence.

HANUKAH SPECIALS!

Many years ago, there were people who wanted to

observe Hanukah lighting, but could not afford a

Menorah. They would take a flat piece of wood for

a base and melt the candle bottom to make H hold.

Today, the answer is simple—a large size Menorah,

using regular size Hanukah candles

One of the controversial plays now on Broadway is Paddy
Chayefsky's "The Tenth Man" . . . It is the kind of a play that
Jews of the older generation consider vulgar, while the younger
generation of American-born Jews - applaud it no end . . . The
play is a tremendous success because 90 percent of the audience
consists of American-born Jews who like the jokes more than
the contents of the performance . . . Also because the actors
are all excellent . . . What about the play itself? . . . Chayefsky
has written a satire taking the Dybuk as his theme . . . Actually
it is a satire primarily on the psychoanalysts . .. While efforts
are being made to exorcise the Dybuk from a young Jewish
girl, it turns out that during the actual ceremony of exorcism
in the synagogue a Dybuk is suddenly driven out of the body
of a young fellow who has been treated by a psychoanalyst
. . . The play is a satire on the modern American youth, who is
cynical about everything, including love, and confuses love with
sex ... As a by-product, the play is satirical also about our young
rabbis : . . An able playwright, Chayefsky has managed to inject
into his play a lot of humor, mixed with vulgar orations, which
tickle the audience . . . As I observed the crowded theater
audience applauding during the lighter moments of the play,
I was startled to see the extent to which these young American
—born Jews -do not realize that "The Tenth Man"—the young
American Jew on the stage—is actually the personification of
each of them . .. Obviously, everyone in the audience assumes
that the satire is directed against others like him, but not against
himself ... In the old Yiddish Art Theater a play like Chayef-
sky's would no doubt be a failure, but on the English stage on
Broadway it will run successfully for a long time . . . It is a
play worth seeing even as a "conversation piece," since it
definitely stimulates discussion.
