Canadian Jurist
Is Major Speaker
at JNF Parley

Justice Samuel Freedman,
one of Canadian Jewry's most
distinguished leaders, will make
his first visit to Detroit next
month, when he appears as
guest speaker at the annual
conference of the Jewish Na-
tional Fund.
The Winnipeg jurist, a judge
of the Court of the Queen's
Bench, Manitoba, since 1952,
will address the luncheon ses-
sion of the all-day JNF parley
on Jan. 3, in the Davison Jewish
Center.
According to Avern Cohn,
conference chairman, Justice
Freedman will join Mendel
Fisher, executive director of
the national JNF, and local
leaders as major speakers at the
sessions.
Special emphasis will be
placed at this year's gathering
on the role of youth in JNF,
Cohn stated. He announced the
appointment of Maurice Silver
as chairman of youth activities.
Silver, a native Detroiter and
member of Habonim in his
youth, recently returned here
after living for several years in
Israel.
Youth delegates will attend
from all local synagogues and
organizations. They will partici-
pate in a film festival and a
special "brain-storming" session,
where they will express their
ideas on JNF and assistance to
Israel.

Eisenhower, Nehru Discuss
Situation in Middle East

NEW DELHI, (JTA)—Presi-
dent Eisenhower, during his
current visit here, discussed
with Indian Prime Minister
Nehru the Middle East situa-
tion, particularly the United
Arab Republic-Israel dispute
over Suez Canal passage, it was
reliably learned here.
Both leaders showed identical
views regarding the desirabil-
ity of unhampered passage
through the canal, and it is
understood that President Eisen-
hower urged Nehru to take
active steps to influence Arab
circles to bring down the hos-
tile attitude against Israel.
It was disclosed that Egyp-
tian President Nasser sent an
important message last week
through the Indian Ambassador
in Cairo, briefing Nehru on the
Middle East situation.

Nehru Again Favors
Sending Suez Issue
to Court at Hague

NEW DELHI.—Prime Minis-
ter Nehru of India Tuesday re-
affirmed India's position on the
issue of the right of passage for
Israel's ships by action in the
International Court of Justice
at The Hague.
During a question hour in the
India Parliament the Prime Min-
ister referred to a statement on

the problem made by India's
delegation at the 14th General
Assembly of United Nations.
"We have always said the
right of free navigation under
the Constantinople Convention
of 1888 must be accepted," the
Prime Minister said. "We have
never moved away from that
position."
Adding that "we favor the
complete instrument 'deposited
with the UN Secretary General
in behalf of Egypt," in which
Hammarskjold suggested refer-
ring the issue to The Hague.
If the existing situation mili-
tates against the interests of the
parties concerned we would fol-
low the advice of the Secretary
General and evoke the oper-
ation of the International
Court."

Appointment of ZEV HYMO-
WITZ as field director for the

Zionist Organization was an-
nounced this week. _
