with Zionist development, there
was a revival, but the progress
even there was very slow at
first. However, the Hebrew
writer Bialik felt encouraged
once after a test. He stopped a
boy in the streets of Tel Aviv
and pulled his ear.
"Chamor!" (d o n k e y), the
youth cried out in Hebrew.
Bialik was delighted. He
curses in Hebrew. When you
curse in a language, it shows
the language is catching on.
Nowadays there are many
different kinds of methods for
the quick learning of Hebrew.
There are even phonograph
records to teach you the lan-
guage. You learn while listen-
ing.
I think the best method is the
Haveto method. It's the method
which makes it easy for chil-
dren to acquire languages so
easily.
Eliezer ben Yehuda, the
father of modern Hebrew, used
the method when he settled in
Jerusalem. He married his bride
on condition that she would
speak no other language but
Hebrew.
Some years ago I was living
in Jerusalem. Ben Yehuda was
dead, but his widow was living.
and I tried to interview her. I
began to speak in English. She
said, "Asur" (pronounced like
aw-soor). It means "Forbidden."1
I then tried Yiddish and she
said "Asur" again. If I wanted
to speak to her, I understood ,
then I had to speak Hebrew
and nothing else.
When you are in a situation
where you have to speak a lan-
guage and no other, you learn
the language.
As I say, children follow the
Haveto method. If they want to
understand what is going on,
they have to learn the language;
So they learn it..
