Weizmann Institute to Convene
International Scientists' Parley

By Jewish News Special Correspondent •

NEW YORK—Arthur L. Krim, president of United
Artists, in an address at the annual dinner of the
American Committee for the Weizmann Institute, at the
Waldorf Astoria, Tuesday evening, announced that an
international conference on the role of science in the

new, underdeveloped states
be convened at the Weizmann
Institute next summer.
Krim said that 30 top-level
scientists from 20 Asian and
African territories have indi-
cated that they would deliver
papers at - this conference. The
planned scientific gathering, he
said, has the approval of UN
Secretary General Dag Ham-
marskjold, Dr. Sarvepalli Rad-
hakrishnan, vice president of
India, Chester Bowles, former
U.S. Ambassador to India, and
others.
The planned conference,
Krim said, will come to grips
with practical problems, such
as war against disease and
hunger. He expressed the
hope that the scientific papers •
to be delivered at the con-
ference will mark a step
forward in bringing the bene-
fits of science's conquests to
these ,peoples who unfortu-
nately have not yet been lib-
erated from squalor, illit-
eracy and disease.
The principal addresses at
the dinner were delivered by
Israel's Ambassador Avraham
Harman and Dr. Jonas Salk
upon whom the Weizmann
Institute conferred an Honor-
ary Fellowship. Responding to
the presentation- of the Fellow-
ship, made by Dewey Stone, Dr.
Salk delivered a - scholarly
piper in which he praised the
activities of the Weizmann In-'
stitute where he visited last
summer. He lauded the late Dr.
Chaim Weizmann, the Insti-
tute's founder, as a humanist
who desired to build a bridge
between science' and the spirit
of _man. .

Dr. Salk said, "will probably
become one of the most sig-
nificant contributions to the
future of man."
Ambassador Harman reiter-
ated Israel's desire for peace
with the Arabs. "None. of the
problems between the Arab
states and Israel will ever get
solved until a direct channel of
communication is established,"
he said. -"We are ready for this
process." -
Harman recalled Dr. Weiz-
mann's attempt to reach an
understanding with the Arabs
after World War I, and he
stated that "the. vision of peace
still lives within us."

Jordanians Slip,
Reveal They Are
Holding Israeli

JERUSALEM—Jordanian au-
thorities inadvertently revealed
Monday they are holding .a
young Israeli missing since
Juhe whose whereabouts they
had consistently declared un-
known to them during those
six months.
The disclosure occurred when
Jordan, after repeated requests;
agreed to return to Israel 17-
year-old Yehuda Paker, who
either wandered into Jordan by
mistake or was kidnapped.
But the individual the Jor-
danians brought to the -Mandel
baum Gate, separating old and
new Jerusalem, was not Paker
but Menashe Mansour, 25, the
Israeli missing since last June.
Paker's parents, who were
waiting at the Mandellbaum
Gate, presumably informed the
Jordanians of the mistake be-
fore Mansour crossed into Is-
rael territory.
The Jordanians quickly
hustled Mansour back into their
car and promised to bring
Paker the next day.
