LONDON—Mrs. Golda Meir,
Israel's Foreign Minister, said
Tuesday that Israel "would be
committing suicide" if it ac-
cepted a large number of Arab
refugees.
This explanation of Israel's
stand on the issue of repatria-
tion of the Arab refugees en
masse, appeared in the Times
of London, whose correspond-
ent is one of a group of over-
seas newsmen now in the
Middle East.
The correspondents met with
Mrs. Meir during a visit to
Israel as part of their mission
to investigate the problems of
the Arab refugees.
Mrs. Meir said Israel had
clearly stated its determination
not to permit the return of
large numbers of the refugees

and its objection to the pro-
posed revival of the Palestine
Conciliation Commission.
She said a revived PCC, as
called for in a resolution on
extension of the mandate of
the UN Relief and Works
Agency now before the UN
special political committee,
might presage some renewed
pressure to give Arab refugees
the option of returning to their
homes if they so desired.
She said that as "part of an
overall Israel-Arab settlement,"
some refugees "might be al-
lowed in under a plan for re-
union of families, but this is
all." She added that Israel was
ready "to pay them compensa-
tion."
Mrs. Meir noted that those
who were children among the
refugees 11 years ago had in
the intervening , years been

indoctrinated in their schools
through specially prepared text-
books to hate -Israel and to aim
at its destruction.
She said that if Israel ac-
cepted these now grown people,
Israel "would be committing
suicide."
The Foreign Minister told
correspondents that Israel had
done and was still doing its
share of solving refugee prob-
lems by having in the past 11
years taken in nearly 1,000,000
refugee Jews.

LONDON—LE Gen .E. L. M:

In his enlightening history of
"The Middle East," published
by Knopf, Prof. Sydney Nettle-
ton Fisher states:
"The Arab League in inter-
nal political affairs proved in-
effective, and its domniation by
Egypt and the United Arab Re-
public robbed it of full useful-
ness. Egypt, Syria and Yemen
stood firmly together; Iraq, Jor-
dan and Lybia looked nervously
at Nasser's commanding posi-
tion; Sudan remained neutral
and - uncommitted; Lebanon
hoped to play a role of corn-,
promiser for the several fac-
tions; and Saudi Arabia faced
an internal dilemma and knew
not which way to turn."
This was written _ „before the
Kassim Tcrisis. ,arid prior to the
renewed 'Arab' League efforts
to press for a boycott against
Israel. Yet, Prof. Fisher's views
seem to coincide with those of
other authorities who look ask-
ance upon the Arab League.
Prof. Fisher routinely reviews
the history of Israel's- develop-
ment and provides an historical
analysis of Israel's emergence
as. a State. He mentions the ac-
tivities of noted British leaders
and some of his comments will
undoubtedly be questioned by
historians. For instance, he
states as a fact that "Lloyd

Burns, retiring commander of
the United Nations Emergency
Farce, said Monday that he did
not anticipate any withdrawal
of UNEF from areas it is now
patrolling between Egypt and
Israel.
During a stop at the London
Airport he said there was al-
ways danger of renewed trouble
and that "there are many prob-
lems, not the least . of which is
the question of the Arab refu-
gees.

Demand France Ban
Use by Schools of
Racist Dictionary

PARIS, (JTA) — The prefect
of the Department of the Seine
announced that, in reply to pro-
tests from the Government
Party as well as from Socialists,
steps will be taken to see
whether the latest edition of the
famous Larousse Dictionary is
to be 'barred from use in the
public schdols. -
Jewish organizations in this
city have 'initiated the demand
for the banning of the new edi-
tion of the dictionary on the
grounds that some definitions
show "racist" tendencies. The
definitions, to which objections
have been voiced; concern such
words . as "racism" and other
words dealing with wartime
Nazi leaders and with the
French resistance movement
during World War II.
The definitions have been de-
nounced as "tendentious." The
dictionary is at present eligible
for use in all government
schools, and efforts are being
made to broaden the ban be:-
yond the Department of the
Seine. to the entire country:
