THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS—Friday, December 11, 1959--22 Crohn, Evaluates Detroit Schools Lawrence W. Crohn, presi- dent of Detroit's Jewish Com- munity Council, in an article, "Detroit's Communal School System," in the Reconstruction- ist, evaluates the United He- brew School program and the Yiddish schools that have been integrated into the system. In his article, Crohn points to "some unresolved problems" and states: "The majority of children drop out of Hebrew schools af- ter Bar Mitzvah or Confirma- tion. The aim of a Bar Mitzvah tilts the attendance towards a preponderance of boys. But, with the greater emphasis on the high school and Midrasha, and the larger community ef- forts in adult education, it is hoped that more and more chil- dren will continue Jewish studies. "A largely unexplored area is the relationship of Jewish education in America to that in Israel. Many Israeli teachers are serving in our American- Jewish schools, but they have to be acclimated to American needs and conditions. While Is- rael dominates the world Jew- ish scene today, little has been done to create a two-way cul- tural bridge—at least not in any formal sense. Even the use of Israeli Hebrew is often resisted. But this is, to be sure, a reflec- tion of the unsolved problems that plague the relationship of Israel and the Diaspora. It would seem the school room could be one location where the spiritual and cultural values of Israeli and American Jewry might coalesce. There is much singing of Israeli songs. But more is needed. "It may be hoped that the new recognition accorded to Jewish teaching will lead to a solution of some of these and many other problems. A larger school system gives a sense of loyalty to children as well as to the adult population. Ameri- can Judaism can no longer be subsumed under the separate regency of synagogue or of com- munity-center or of Hebrew School. The organic community, if it is realizable, will come from the needs and the prac- tices of Jewry. The community school system will come only if the community is ready for it. The experiences of Detroit may be a sign-post pointing to a better future." Mr. and Mrs. Jay Silverman, now of New Rochelle, N.Y., but residents at the time of Home- wood, Ill., said the unauthorized circumcision was performed on June 21, 1958. The suit was filed in Superior Court in Chicago. According to the suit, the hos- pital officials asked the Silver- mans whether they wanted their son circumcised. The parents did not fill out the hospital's application authorizing such surgery because they wanted, they said in the suit, "a Hebrew ceremony.' The suit said the hospital "violated" the parents' request and that their son, Brian, thereby "was deprived of his religious rights, status and salvation" and that the parents were "permanently deprived of the joy, festivity and splendor of the religious sacrament of circumcision for their first born YOUNG ISRAEL of Northwest Detroit 9 a.m. Saturday. ...where you get so much more for so very little.. . even for less than just travel costs South!
