THE DETRO IT JEWISH NEWS—Friday, December 4, 1959-24 Slate Program for PW Donor A Backward Glance on Kauftnan's 50th Birthday Reveals Active Life Climaxing a three-month fund-raising campaign, the De- troit Council of Pioneer WoMen wil hold its annual donor event at 8:30 p.m., Dec. 13, in the Ford Auditorium. Members of the 17 Detroit area chapters have. set a goal of $50,000 to help maintain social s e r v i c e programs conducted locally and also in Israel by their sister organization, Moetzet Hapo- alot. Mrs. Harold Noveck, pro- gram chair- man for the Council, an- nounces t h a t Mrs. Noveck Gov. G. Men- •nen Williams, who recently was a visitor in Israel, will be guest speaker. He will compare this trip with a similar visit two years ago. Also on the program will be David Ellin, stage, television and radio star and a folk singer of note who has fluency in 12 dialects. The Yemenite dance and song group, founded by Baruch Yef- feth, will be an added . high- light of the evening. The group, chosen to represent Israel at the recent Israel Revue at New York's Radio City Theater, has appeared in Israel and abroad with great success. The fund-raising drive will provide the means to support the 770 installations now oper- ated by Moetzet Hapoalot, in- cluding agricultural schools, day nurseries, hygiene guidance centers and •vocational training schools. These facilities include three new schools at Nachlat Lehuda, Beersheba and Haifa. For tickets or reservations for the donor event, call DI 1-0786. Ira G. Kaufman, Wayne County Probate Judge, will cele- brate his 50th birthday Sunday, Dec. 13. And if he can manage to find time between his whirl- wind of activities to look back on his life, he will find it filled to the brim with dedicated serv- ices to the community. His election to the Probate Court judgeship in November of 1958 was the latest feather added to the judge's cap. A prominent leader in Detroit OH EL EXCLUSIV L. FEderal 4-4149 Violinist Oistrakh at Masonic, Monday The first appearance of David Oistrakh at the Masonic Temple at 8:20 p.m., Monday, provides a major excitement of the con- cert season of 1959-60. Oistrakh, born in Odessa, Russia, son of a bookkeeper who was an amateur f i dler and of a mother who sometimes sang in the local opera house chorus, was quickly caught up in the. intense musical ac- tivity of the city, starting the violin at 5, and as a prodigy, be- coming the Oistrakh protege of Glazounov. Although Oistrakh's first pub- lic performance took place when he was 12, his professional career did. not begin until he was graduated from the Odessa Conservatory at 18. With di- ploma in hand, the young Oistrakh sallied forth in his first concert tour across Russia —from Leningrad to Siberia, supporting his family. World acclaim first gathered around him in 1937 when he took the first prize in the Inter- national Eugene Ysaye Competi- tion in Brussels. Five years later he won the Stalin Prize. As do most of Russia's great virtuosos, Oistrakh divides his time between teaching and con- cert touring. David Oistrakh met his wife, Tamara Ivanovna, when they were fellow students at the Con- servatory. She began her career as a pianist, but has not played in public in some years. They have a son, Igor, a brilliant violinist in his own right. sia, Kaufman attended New York University, and is a grad- uate of its law school, with a doctor of jurisprudence degree. His work for the United He- brew Schools—he has been vice- president for over a decade— had their beginnings in New York where he roomed, before marriage, with Dr. Abraham I. Katsh, son of the Chief Rabbi of Petach Tikvah, Israel. Together the two men set about gathering funds for a He- brew course for New York Uni- versity, and finally succeeded in establishing such a class in the school of adult education. Today, Dr. Katsh is chairman of the Semitics department at NYU, where he is a full pro- fessor with a staff of eight in- structors. Kaufman's fair - mindedness and judiciousness have won him many new friends since he has assumed his present role on the Detroit bench. In a year as Pro- War Veterans to Fete bate Judge, Kaufman has yet Want The Best? to have an appeal made from Past JWV Commander Ask the Folks Who've Had Detroit Post of the Jewish one of his decisions.
