JPI Issues, Third
Jewish Cook Book

The Jewish Parents Institute
of the Detroit Jewish Commun-
ity Center decided to do some-
thing several years ago to
modernize Jewish cooking pro-
cedures. Its members enjoyed
sharing family recipes with each
other, particularly the delight-
ful Jewish holiday recipes. And
so they prepared a cookbook of
selected Jewish recipes to share
with others.
Two editions were prepared,
in 1952 and 1954. Both are out
of print but requests for the
book kept pouring in. To answer
the demand, JPI has just issued
the third edition, "Family Fa-
vorites Old and New."
"Family Favorites" is not a
complete cook book, but rather
a collection of favorite recipes,
-short cuts and time savers that
JPI families have developed and
enjoy using.
The book touches on the en-
tire range of cookery, from meat
to dessert, from vegetables to
beverages. All the traditional
recipes are included—blintzes,
ihamantashen, k u g e 1, potato
latkes, gefilte fish, shtrudle,
honey cake, stuffed cabbage and
borsht. There are also helpful
sections of cooking tips, quan-
tity cooking, specialities, a glos-
sary and a cake cutting guide.
The JPI - cookbook, "Family
Favorites Old and New," is the
product of many JPI volunteer
hours. Members collected their
favorite recipes and experi-
mented to obtain exact measure-
ments.
Copies, at $2.10, including
postage, may be ordered from
Jewish Parents Institute, Jew-
ish Community Center, 18100
Meyers, Detroit 35, Michigan.

Name Committee for
Auxiliary Luncheon

- In a unique introduction of
the instruments that comprise
the -symphony orchestra, Julius
Chajes, its conductor, complete-
ly captivated the audience.
The music that followed was
equally enthralling. Particularly
enjoyable was Mozart's Piano
Concerto in D Major, performed
by three talented young ladies
as soloists.
Rita Sloan, 15, and Marilyn
Lucas and Susan King, both 17,
performed extremely well, and
no doubt, gave encouragement
to many of the children just be-
ginning music lessons. All three
girls are students of Chajes.
Alvin Belknap was soloist in
Purcell's "Trumpet Voluntary,"
Bela Wurtzler was bass soloist
in Chajes' "Melody," and Rich-
ard Luby played the violin solo
in another Chajes piece, "Ca-
priccio."
Completing the program were
Beethoven's Romanze in F Ma-
jor and Tales from the Vienna
Woods by Strauss.
It is hoped that more such
vehicles in good music can be
made available to our young
people. Only it might be better
to advance the time from 4:30
to avoid conflict with the dinner
hour.
