Nehru Explains
Lack of Exchange
with Israel

NEW DELHI, (JTA) - The
government of India feels it can
make a better contribution to-
ward the solution of Arab-Isra-
eli conflicts by withholding dip-
lcmatic exchanges with Israel
at this time, Prime Minister
Jawaharlal Nehru declared here
recently.
Nehru was a guest at a din-
ner tendered him by the Press
Club of India, when he was ask-
ed "You have promised, accord-
ing to some reports, to recog-
nize Israel. What is your posi-
tion on this matter?"
The prime minister replied:
"Our attitude in regard to Is-
rael has been explained quite
fully to people from Israel as
well as to others. You may say
that it is not a very logical atti-
tude, possibly, because we rec-
ognized Israel, of course, long
ago, but have not followed up
this recogniton by exchanging
diplomatic missions. Recogni-
tion is a fact. We did not ex-
change missions chiefly because
we felt that we could thus play
a better role in easing conflicts
between Middle Eastern coun-
tries and Israel."
(Recently, India's d e f ense
minister, V. K. Krishna Menon,
who is Nehru's principal aide on
foreign policy, gave exactly the
same explanation of his govern-
ment's failure to exchange dip-
lomatic missions with Israel,
when queried on the issue in
New York by a representative
of the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency.)

HAIFA, (JTA) - A call to
American Jewry to retain the

and above regular contributions,
was issued this week in a spe-
cial resolution approved by the
