He was named Provost in 1957. He served as Hillel Professor of Jewish Literature and Thought of Vanderbilt Univer- sity, 1949-1952, after serving from 1946 to 1949 as director of the Hillel Foundation at Yale University. Earlier, he served for four years as a Navy and Marine Corps Chaplain in World War II. A native of Dayton, 0., he attended public schools in St. Louis and received his B. A. from the University of Missouri in 1932. He received his Ph. D. from Yale. He was awarded the Presi- dent's Fellowship by Brown University and prepared a book on the New Testament. Pub- lished in the spring of 1956 and reprinted in 1957, Dr. Sandmel s book, "A Jewish Understanding of the New Testament," is a sig- nificant publication in the field of religion. His book, "Philo's Place in Judaism," appeared in 1956. Dr. Sandmel's "The Genius of Paul," was published by Farrar, Straus and Cudahy in 1958. He is preparing an "Introduction to Bible (Old Testament)" for Al- fred A. Knopf. ' DR. His subject will be "Judaism and Christianity in the First Century." He will be introduced by Leonard N. Simons. At 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dr. Sandmel will address faculty and students of Wayne State University, at Kresge Audi- torium, on the subject, "Hellen- istic Influences on Judaism and Christianity." Dr. Abram Spiro, director of the lecture series and chair- man of the WSU Near East- ern Department, has extended an invitation to all who are interested to attend the Wednesday evening lecture. Dr. Sandmel is a specialist in the New Testament and its rela- tion to Judaism. A graduate of HebreW Union College, where he was ordained in 1937, Dr. Sandmel was ap- pointed to the faculty of his Elect Detroiters to CJFWF Posts Max M. Fisher, president of the Jewish Welfare Federation, has been elected to the board of directors of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds, it was announced by Irving Kane of Cleveland, new- ly-elected CJFWF president, at the closing session of the Coun- cil's 28th General Assembly, in San Francisco. Judge Theodore Levin was re-elected to the board. Also continuing as a board member is Isidore Sobeloff, Federation executive vice-president. Mrs. Hy C. Broder, Mrs. Charles Lakoff and Sobeloff presented papers at the Assem- bly. Fisher is a member of the CJFWF national-local relations and Israel relations committees. Levin is a member of the .CJFWF budget and finance committees. Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, will serve as visiting chief of obstetrics and gynecology at De- troit's Sinai Hospital on Dec. 9. The day's program will in- clude a clinical conference at 9 a.m., a press conference at 11:30 a.m., lecture on "Fetal Distress" at 1 p.m. and a ward walk at 2 p.m. A subscription dinner for Dr. Guttmacher, who is also clinical Austria Uncovers Neo..Nazis' Plot Direct JTA Teletype Wire To The Jewish News VIENNA—Austrian police re- ported Tuesday the uncovering of a gigantic export swindle in- volving withholding of almost $2,000,000 which was used to finance an organization of neo- Nazis in Austria. Police arrested four mer- chants and an attorney living in Saltszburg, but one of the leaders in the swindle, mer- chant Lothar Rafael, escaped to Munich. Police said that Rafael used some of the swindle funds t , help support the "Sorbe" which the Austrian Ministry of the Interior banned a year ago for neo-Nazi activity. Dr. Guttmacher Pleads for Frank Discussion of Planned Parenthood "It is high time that men of good will burst the medical, political and religious shackles which bind them, to analyze and solve health problems by frank, free and unbigoted discussion," writes Dr. Alan F. Guttmacher, in his book, "Babies by Choice or by Chance," to be published Dec. 3 by Doubleday. Dr. Guttmacher is chief of obstetrics and gynecology at Mt.
