Wins Highest
Literary Award

ti

PARIS, (JTA)—A 31-year-old
Jewish metal-worker, Andre
Schwarz-Bardt, was named as
winner of the Prix Goncourt,
France's outstanding literary
award, for his novel, "Les Der-
niers des Justes," ("The Last of
the Just") which deals with the
plight of the Jewish mother
through the ages. The book has
enjoyed unparalleled popular
and critical success here.
Schwarz-Bardt was born in
Metz of Polish-Jewish parents
who had migrated to France in
1924. His father was a peddler.
The young writer lost both his
parents and most of his family
during the Hitler persecutions.
The Prix Goncourt is tradi-
tionally awarded on the first
Monday in December but the
selection committee advanced
the date this year because of
reports that the judges of the
Prix Femina, a major award,
had also selected the young.
Jewish writer to receive that
award.
The Schwarz-Bardt book has
been the target of criticism and
plagiarism because it has a
number of citations and quota-
tions, including lines from Men-
dele Mach er Sforim, without
attribution.

TURIN, (JTA) — Sen. Piero
' Caleffi, president of the Asso-
ciation of Italian Political Con-
centration Camp Inmates, warn-
ed the second national congress
of the organization here that
"if we wish to remain free
human beings, we must not
forget the 12,000,000 exter-
minated people" of the Nazi
regime.
He said that 40,000 Italians
had been deported to Germany
for racial or political reasons,
of whom only 3,000 had re-
turned. Many of those who re-
turned, he said, later suc-
cumbed to the effects of tor-
ture and hunger.
Among the - chief problems
facing the survivors of Nazi
brutality, he declared, were
medical, social and financial
assistance and the obtaining of
state pensions for the victims
and their families.
Delegates to the congress, in-
cluding representatives of the
Union of Italian Jewish Com-
munities, made a pilgrimage to
the memorial to the Unknown
Deportee and to the monument
to the Jewish martyrs. An ex-
hibition was opened in con-
junction with the congress
highlighting the martyrdom of
the victims of Nazism. It was
composed of hundreds of photo-
graphs and objects such as
lampshades made of human
skin.
