Dr. Joachim Prinz, national
president of the American Jew-
ish Congress, delivered a sting-
ing rebuke to the American
Jewish Committee for its "self-
serving, intemperate attack" on
the manner in which 21 national
Jewish organizations joined
forces in an attempt to see So-
viet Premier Khrushchev dur-
ing his visit to the United States
this summer.
Dr. Prinz's address at an
AJCongress rally in Temple
Emanuel in San Francisco was
in rebuttal to a statement issued
by Herbert Ehrmann, of Boston,
president of the American Jew-
ish Committee.
. Tracing the background of
Jewish effort to confer with the
Soviet leader. Dr. Prinz recalled
that when news of Premier
Khrushchev's visit to the U.S.
was announced, he was attend-
ing the plenary session of the
World Jewish Congress . in
Stockholm. He said he immedi-
ately wired the chairman of the
President's Conference urging
that a "united representative
Jewish delegation" seek a meet-
ing with Khrushchev.
Dr. Prinz rejected as "gratui
tour speculation" the American
Jewish Committee view that
the refusal of Soviet Premier
Khrushchev to see the Jewish
delegation was the result of
"publicity" about the projected
meeting.
Dr. Prinz said that Khrush-
chev's unwillingness to meet
the Jewish group should not
obscure the "very substantial
gains" resulting from the Jew-
ish effort to see him the forma-
tion of "a more representative
committee, working in greater
harmony than ever before," the
adoption of. a "joint statement
of the Jewish position," "memo-
randa on the status of Soviet
Jewry submitted to high gov-
ernment officials and other per-
sonalities Khrushchev w a s
scheduled to meet" and keeping
the "State Department in-
formed."
Dr. Prinz said the 21 Jewish
agencies had invited the Amer-
ican Jewish Committee to join
with them • and that a profes-
sional of the AJCommittee staff
had helped to draft the joint
statement. Irving Engel, former
president of the AJCommittee,
even joined in the unanimous
vote adopting the statement,
Dr. Prinz disclosed.
Philip M. Klutznick, chairman
of the Presidents' Conference,
also severely criticized the state-
ment by the American Jewish
Committee's president.
Klutznick who, as chairman
of the ad hoc committee
of organizations, sought to
establish an American Jew-
ish representation to see the
Soviet Premier, told the
board of governors of Bnai
Brith that the American Jew-
ish Committee had "no mo-
nopoly of interest" in the
plight of the Jews behind the
Iron Curtain. He said it was
"ridiculous" to withhold
knowledge from the Ameri-
can Jewish community of
Eisenhower's action, particu-
larly when the White House
had no objection. He said if
the publication was a breach,
it had not been helped by
the AJC statement "which
boasts that it sent someone
to see the President."
Klutznick disclosed that in
the negotiations for a united
representation, the AJC had
made conditions for joining the
ad hoc body, all of which "had
been substantially met"; that,
if an appointment had been ob-
tained with Khrushchev, an
AJC member would have been
a member of the delegation;
that AJC observers had ap-

Related stories developed
that Lebanese security authori-
ties had uncovered a spy net
which was allegedly working
under the cover of various Am- .
erican troupes touring the
Middle East.
