Shomogi, Malben at Israel Bond Dinner on Nov. 29 Business Briefs Crippled by multiple sclerosis in Israel for the care of handi- Avraham Harman, Ambassa- dor of the State of Israel to the United States, will be the guest of honor at a tribute dinner sponsored by the Detroit Israel Bond Committee, at the Statler-,, Hilton Sunday evening. Nov. 29. Irwin I. Cohn will be chair- man for the dinner, it was an- nounced by Tom Borman, gen eral chairman of the Detroit Israel Bond Committee. This will be the first visit of Ambassador Harman to Detroit since his appointment in June. He is a dynamic and energetic speaker, who has long been a leader in the Israeli govern- ment. The tribute dinner for Am- bassador Harman is open to the entire community, it was stress- ed by Cohn. Reservations for the dinner may be made by call- ing the Israel Bond office, WO. 2-5091. A member of the Executive of the Jewish Agency from 1956 until his appointment as Am- bassador in June, 1959, Harman previously served as assistant director general of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Jerusa- lem. One of the foremost members of Israel's diplomatic corps, he has served his country in vari- ous top-level capacities since her establishment. In 1948, he was appointed Deputy Director of the Israel government press office. A year later, he was des- ignated Israel's first Consul General in Montreal. Harman was transferred to the U.S. in October, 1950, as director of the Israel Office of Information and, concurrently, as counselor to the delegation of Israel to the UN. In 1953, he was appointed Consul General a Israel in New York and serv- ed until 1955, when he returned :to Israel to assume a post at the Israel Foreign Ministry. Communit in Zionist Region at Parley, Nova 15 . :Ilistadrut Issues Conference Call A call to organizations and trade groups participating in the Detroit Israel Histadrut Campaign this week urged total representation at the annual conference of Histadrut, to be ,held at 8:30 p.m., Thursday, in the Hayim Greenberg Center, 19161 Schaefer. Stressing the importance of this year'S parley, Morris Lieber- man, campaign chairman, stated that "the many new tasks being shouldered by Histadrut, at the request of the Israeli govern- ment, will place before the con- ;ference a fresh challenge to mobilize maximum support for the 1960 campaign." Delegates will hear first-hand reports on new immigrants, pioneering forces in Israel and their progress and problems. They also will elect campaign officers and division chairmen and establish a timetable for campaign funds. The campaign workers will elect delegates to represent De- troit at the national Histadrut convention at New York's Com- modore Hotel over the Thanks- giving weekend. According to Lieberman, large turnout of representatives is expected for Thursday's con- ference because of the general concern still prevalent over in- ternal problems in the Jewish state. What Israel expects to achieve at the current session of the United Nations will be • discussed at the -10th ! annual con- vention of the Michigan Region ZOA which will convene this Sunday, at the. Henrose Hotel. The speaker will be Mich- ael Elizur, Israel's third ranking, diplo- Leon Kay mat at the UN, who will address the lunch- eon session at 12:30 . p.m., which is open to the public. Delegates representing 15 communities in Michigan will attend the one-day parley which will open at 10:30 a.m. and continue through the day. A symposium on "What. Zion- ism Means to the Young Amer- ican Jew Today" is scheduled for 11 a.m., with Benzion Gotlib of Flint and Irving Sniderman of Detroit as discussants and Dr. Edward Neufeld of Grand Rapids as moderator. The world Zionist scene and Israel's international problems will be reviewed by Leon Kay, regional president, in his pres- idential message at 11:30 a.m. A workshop session at 3 p.m. will hear a report on Kfar Silver and ZOA House, ZOA's two major projects in Israel, by Philip Slomovitz. Other panel discussions will deal with public relations, Jew- ish National Fund, Israel Bonds and American Zionist Fund. The Zionist Organization of Detroit, of which Judge Ira G. Kaufman- is president, will be host to regional delegates at the Balfour Concert and recep- tion this Saturday evening, at the Ford Auditorium. A concert by folk singer BILL JOHNSON will be held at 8:30 p.m., Saturday, in - the Williams-' burg Room of the Medea Hotel, Mt. Clemens. Johnson, who sings folk songs in 10 languages, appears under the auspices of the Jewish Welfare Board lec- ture bureau. which he contracted in a Siberian labor camp during _the last war, an immigrant from Budapest is devoting himself to painting in the Malben Mahne Israel camp in Israel. Moshe Shomogi is gaining worldwide fame with his art work. His tremendous murals which decorate the Mahne Israel camp are attracting the interest of visitors from all over the world. A series of ShomOgi's out- standing paintings have been brought to Detroit and will be placed on exhibition here at the Open Door Gallery, 18090 Wyoming, for at least a week's display. The exhibit will be prolonged, depending on the interest that will be shown in it. Shomogi's activities serve to call attention to the work of Malben in Israel—the Joint Distribution Committee's pro- ject of sponsoring institutions capped immigrants. In addition to paintin g, Shomogi decorates lamps, uses Israeli sand for reproduction of famous holy places on spe- cially designed murals and he produces oils as well as pen sketches.
