Tourism in Israel Is Cover Story
in Current Issue of Holiday

Israel has hit the big time in
tourism!
Recognition of the many at-
tractions for tourists in the Jew-
ish state is given by Holiday
Magazine in a cover story by
Robert Graves in its December
issue. Beautiful photographs by
Arnold Newman showing many
aspects of Israeli life and of the
Israeli people illustrate the
lengthy tribute.
There is hardly a phase of
Israel's growth that hasn't been
captured in this fascinating
story of a land that the author
described as "the most exciting
country to visit in the modern
world."

Truly Inspired
by Visit to Israel

Not only does Graves delve
into the high points of history
that usually attract the tourist,
he tells the story of the Israeli
people and their lust for life,
learning and peace.
One of the most interesting
sections of the article, which
even most Jews know little
about, is a table giving a variety
of information giving specific
information to the tourist plan-
ning a visit.
September to April is consid-
ered the best time to visit Is-
rael, the author states, and a
table of temperatures illustrates
why this is so. Eilat, for in-
stance, has a rather pleasant
high of 71 and a low of 52 in
winter. In summer, however,
the temperature reaches 104,
with a low of 76.
Other cities and their tem-
perature in summer, are:

Tel Aviv
Jerusalem
Tiberias

More comfortable winter tem-
peratures are:

Mrs. SARAH LYONS, visit-
ing in Israel last summer on
a tour sponsored by Hista-
drut, obviously liked what
she saw. Returning home, she
gave a big boost to Israeli
tourism by immediately en-
rolling as a member of De-
troit's Kinneret Chapter of
Pioneer Women. Not content
with this alone, Mrs. Lyons
is shown here presenting a
check to Mrs. REBECCA
WARREN, Kinneret presi-
dent, to cover the complete
cost of equipping the chil-
dren's department of Kupat
Holim's clinic at Jaffa, Israel.

U.S. citizens need only a valid
passport and a certificate of
vaccination against smallpox to
gain entry. into Israel. A visa is
granted without charge upon
arrival in the country, is valid
for three months and renew-
able.
The traveler to Israel, the
article points out, may take in
or bring out any amount of for-
eign currency; however, Israel
currency may neither be
brought in nor taken out. A
special 20 percent cash premium
over the official rate of ex-
change is given tourists. The
American dollar thus brings
2.16 Israeli pounds. On depar-
ture, up to $100 in Israel money
can be reconverted.
Many other revealing facts
are covered in the Holiday
story, which is one of the most
complete accounts of modern
Israel, its people and progress
printed in a general magazine
story.
