Detroit Youth
Describes His
Moment of Panic

Israeli Vessel Is Crippled in Collision; Crewman Lost

. A Detroit youth . on his way
to Israel to join the Habonim
Workshop this week told of a
moment of panic, when the Is-
raeli ship on which he was
traveling was struck by an Am-
erican freighter last Thursday
in New York Harbor.
Although damage to the Is-
raeli vessel, the SS Israel, was
minimal and passengers suf-
fered only a few minor bruises,
the impact cost the life of one
of the Israeli crewmen.
Jerry Kutnick, 18-year-old son
of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron. Kutnick,
of Woodingham Dr., related how
he was standing on deck as it
steamed past the Statue of
Liberty.
Then there was a thumping
crash as the two vessels col-
lided. The Israeli crewman
(later identified as Chaim Beni-
tes, of Haifa), who had been
climbing a ladder right next to
the Detroiter, was jarred loose
and plunged into the water. His
body has still not been re-
covered.
Jerry was a witness at a pre-
liminary hearing in New York.
He did not get to' his fran-
tic parents, who had heard
about the accident on television,
until the following morning.
Then, he assured them that
he and the rest of the pas-
sengers escaped without injury.
Jerry left Saturday night by
plane for Israel where he will
testify at an inquiry of the
Israel government.
The youth will then continue
on his journey, joining mem-
bers of the Habonim Workshop,
who have been in the country
since September. Jerry's trip
was delayed over a month be-
cause of his father's recent ill-
ness.

were reported. However, one
Israel seaman, Chaim Benites of
Haifa, was missing.
"The extent of the damage
was not immediately deter-
mined," Hammer stated. "A
preliminary examination dis-
closed a 35-foot gash in the port
side of the Israel from below
the water line to the promenade
deck.
"The ship proceeded under
her own power to drydock in
Brooklyn, and necessary repairs
will be made as quickly as pos-
sible. Passengers remained calm
throughout the whole incident
and went to bed at the usual
hour Thursday evening.
"They were informed at
breakfast on Friday morning of
the cancellation of the voyage
and the American-Israeli Ship-
ping Company, Zim's represen-
tatives in the United States,
made an all-out effort to assist
the passengers in effecting
alternative travel plans," Ham-
mer said.
. Removed from the Israel in
drydock was 15 tons of small
arms amniunition consigned to
the Israel Ministry of Defense,
which was listed on the ship's
manifest.
The ammunition—.30 and .50
caliber bullets—was taken by
the Coast Guard to the Raritan,
N.J., Arsenal for safe keeping.
Capt. Samuel B. Jones, New
York harbor pilot, indicated at

ule of sailing everrthree weeks
from New- York harbor.
Hammer expreSSed confidence
that •with the exception of the
current voyage, which had to
be cancelled because of the
collision, the schedule will. be
maintained. This incident will
not affect the cruise schedule
of the S.S. Jerusalem which will
inaugurate the 1959-60 season
with a cruise beginning this
Wednesday, he emphasized.
