Soviet Anti-Semitic Leaflets Reach
U. S., Call for Pogroms: USSR Press
Believed to Be Inspiring Bigotry

NEW YORK, (JTA) — Leaf-
lets signed by an organization
calling itself "Kill the Jews
and Save Russia" are being dis-
tributed ni a number of Soviet
c i t i e s, particularly in the
Ukraine, according to the New
York Times which noted "a
sharp increase in Soviet attacks
against Judaism and religious
Jews." The newspaper said that
copies of these leaflets have
now reached the United States.
In the Moscow suburb of
Malakhoka, leaflets signed with
the initials of the anti-Jewish
organization were distributed
before an attempt was made
there on October 4 to burn
down the synagogue during
Rosh Hashanah. Similar leaf-
lets, - the Times reports, had
been distributed on the eve of
Rosh Hashanah in there
Ukrainian cities Kharkov,
Kiev and Vinnitza. One of the
leaflets, received here, criti-
cized the Bolsheviks for having
rushed to give the Jews equal-
ity.
The Jewish woman who
died in the Malakhovka syna-
gogue arson attempt was iden-
tified by the newspaper as
Mme. Sarah Gordovskaya. It
said she "did not die by
accident, as was first be-
lieved, but was strangled
and her body thrown into
the blaze."
The Times report said that
on the eve of Rosh Hashanah

Ancient Settlements
in the Israel Negev

_Translation of Hebrew column
published by Brit Ivrit Ilamit.
Shivta—that was the name of one
of the Nabatean towns in the south-
ern Negev. The life of the, Nabate-
ans, and especially their agriculture,
arouses great interest among the
scholars (researchers) in Israel. To
this day it is possible to find near
their ancient settlements remains of
dams in which these early inhabi-
tants of the Negev succeeded in
collecting the sparse rain-waters.
A group of scholars decided to
investigate thoroughly the dams, the
stone terraces, and even the dwell-
ings of the Nabateans. And already
today, one year after they began the
scientific work, the investigators
have found interesting and encour-
aging things.
The Government Tourist Corpora-
tion of Israel is also exhibiting great
interest in the relics of the Naba-
tean culture in the Negev. Avdat,
a Nabatean town which was in ex-
istence also in the Byzantine period.
was visited this year by thousands
of tourists, who saw the remnants
of dwellings, houses of prayer, pub-
lic buildings, household utensils,
etc., which are well preserved in
the dry climate of the Negev.

British Envoy to Israel Presents Credentials

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Bri-
tain's new envoy to Israel pre-
sented his letters of credence
to President Itzhak Ben-Zvi in
a brief ceremony in which he
voiced confidence that Britain
could rely on Israel's coopera-
tion in the common interest of
establishing peace in the Middle
East.
Patrick Francis Hancock, the
new British ambassador, told
President Ben-Zvi that the
British people were impressed
by Israel's achievements and
admired the qualities which
made them possible. He noted
the coincidence of the ceremony
and the anniversary of the is-
suance of the Balfour Declara-
tion on this day 42 years ago.
He also paid tribute to the late

Dr. Chaim Wei zma tin, first
president of Israel.
In his reply. President Ben-
Zvi stressed the historic ties
that linked Israel to Britain
and told the ambassador that
the name of Lord Balfour was
held in reverence and great
gratitude in Israel.
