Beth El Lectures
Start on Monday

Expect Record Crowd, of 600
for Yeshivah Dinner-Show

With advance reservations al-
ready totaling 500, leaders of
the Businessmen's Council of
the Beth Yehudah School this
week predicted that a crowd of
over 600 would set an attend-
ance record for this year's din-
ner and show.
Allen B. Kramer, chairman,
announced that Arthur Lee
Simpkins, popular Negro enter-
tainer, would headline this
year's show, to be held begin-
ning with a cocktail hour at 6
p.m., Nov. 15, at the Latin
Quarter.

dinner co-chairmen, and Wolf

will be Dr. Abraham Heschel,

on Nov. 23, and Dr. Robert Got.•
dis will deliver the concluding
lecture on Dec. 7.
The -central theme of the lec-
ture series is "Who Speaks for
God?"

night clubs, on television and
in the movies, will be Henry
Van Horn and his "Magic in
Music Orchestra," formerly the
Jules Klein Orchestra.
Simpkins, a youthful tenor
who couples popular songs with
operatic music, has compiled a
unique record in show business
—he has been brought back for
a return engagement at every
club in which he appeared.
He is fluent in six languages,
including Hebrew, and has won
many Jewish friends with his
rendition of "Eli, Eli." He also
sings in Italian, French, Span-
ish and Gaelic.
Simpkins has been seen on
the Milton Berle, Jackie Glea-
son, Kate Smith and Red Skel-
ton Shows, You Asked for It
and Show of Shows in televi-
sion.
He also has appeared in night
clubs from New York to Las
Vegas and Miami to London'S
famed Palladium Theater,
where critics warmly took him
to their heart.
A music major at Paine Uni-
versity, it was there that Simp-
kins first attracted attention as
a vocalist. He was featured
singer for five years with the
Earl Hines Orchestra.

long considered a highlight of

among the new faculty members
of the eighth
annual Syna-
gogue Adult
Institute.

given at Beth Aaron Synagogue,

Courses offered will consti-
tute an annual . series in rab-
binics, literature, Bible, Jewish
history,_ Talmud, the Prayer-
book and Hebrew, both as• a
spoken language and as the
language of the prayerbook.
Other members of the Insti-
tute faculty include Rabbis Mor-
ris Adler, Hyman-Agress, Benja-
min H. Gorrelick and Jacob E.
Segal, Mrs. Harold J. Goodman
and Alexander Roberg.
Among the planners of the
Institute are representatives of
each of the four participating
synagogues. They include:
Max Biber, Milton Gilman,
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Katchke and
Mrs. Dan Shapiro, Adas Shalom;
Mr. and Mrs. Ben Z. Freeman.
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Goldberg,
Harry Goldstein, Mrs. George
Fredson, Sam Loberman and
Thomas Tannis, Beth Aaron.
Others are Mrs. Ralph For-
man, Hy Kinzer and Isadore
Silverman, Evergreen Jewish
Cong.; and Henry Auslander,
Dr. Alvin B. Lezell, Mrs. Jay

The Institute is open to all

They will enter the sanctuary
