ZOD Film Festival Is Preliminary to Nov. 14 Annual Balfour Concert A film festival, one of a series of preliminary events to the annual Balfour Concert, will be held at 8:30 p.m., Tues- day, at Beth Aaron Synagogue. The concert, featuring singer Jennie Tourel and Israel vio- linist Shimon Mishory, is planned for 8:30 p.m., Nov. 14, at the Ford Auditorium. Speaking at Tuesday's -pro- gram will be Dr. Leon Fram, of Temple Israel, a past presi- dent of the Zionist Organiza- tion of Detroit, sponsors of the annual - Balfour event. Films to be shown are "Leonard Bernstein in Israel," recently presented on the Omnibus television series; "Wilderness of Zin," a color movie taken by Dr. Nelson Glueck, president of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion; and "The 11th Anniversary of Israel," an authentic Israeli film of this year's independence festivities. A social hour will follow the film presentation. The public is invited at no charge. Numerous professional groups are being organized in connec- tion with this year's concert, it is announced by Sherman Shapiro, chairman. Among the corps of dentists who are contacting all of their colleagues are Drs. -Harold A. Maxmen, Louis Berent, A. S. Pearlman, Joseph E. Goodstein and Philip M. Sherman. Meeting at the home of Dr. I. Walter Silver to establish a similar physicians group were Drs. Joseph Carp, Charles Git- lin, Sidney Friedlaender, San- ford Bennett, Bernard Wes- ton, Herbert H. Cohen, Julian Stern, Leo Orecklin, Morris Z. Greenberg, Leonard Haking and Dr. Alex Friedlaender, chairman. Sp!endid Concert Ushers in 20th Center Symphony Year Among the notable "first night" performances which have drawn the entire community's attention this week was the first concert of the Center Symphony Orchestra's 20th season, held Tuesday night in the Aaron De- Roy Theater of the Center. More than 500 people gave an ovation to the orchestra's able director, Julius Chajes, who be- gan his 20th year as the active head of the Center's music de- partment and the Center's Sym- phony Orchestra. with genuine skill, and Lalo's Symphony Espagnole. The latter featured as soloist the able- Israeli violinist, Zvi Zeitlin, who helped to enhance a fine evening's program. Zeit- lin responded to several curtain calls by playing as an encore the Shepherd Song by Paul Ben- Chaim, Israeli composer. Y., (JTA) — Israeli scientists and medical authorities, aided by two United Nations agencies, are conducting a special food and dietary survey among im- migrants in Israel, to determine the food and diet habits of the newcomers and methods for helping them eliminate disease and reduce infant mortality, ac- cording to a UN report pub- lished here. The report appears in the monthly "United Nations Review." an official publication of the UN. Dr. Sarah Bavly, head of the College of Nutrition and Home Economics in Jerusalem, is in charge of the survey, aided by physicians of the Ha d. a s s a h Medical School and the Israel Government's Central Bureau of Statistics and Economic Re- search. On behalf of the United Nations, the project is being aided by the United Nations Children's Fund and the World Health Organization.
