AJ Congress Asks

Romanians' Release;
Over 20 in Prison

NEW YORK (JTA) — The
American Jewish Congress, re-
porting that more than 20 Ro-
manian Jewish community lead-
ers and rabbis have been ar-
rested in half a dozen cities for
"Zionist activity" in recent
months, issued an appeal for
their release to the Romanian
government.
The AJC said that arrests
since last March included two
rabbis, Pinchas Miller of Deva
and Nicholas Schonfeld of
Arad. The arrests reportedly
have taken place in Bucharest,
Tulcea, Orasul Stalin,
Galati, Moinesti and Constanta.
Two relatives of Theodor
Herzl, founder of modern Zi-
onism, were among those re-
cently arrested. Magda Herzl
was sentenced to ten years' im-
prisonment on charges of trans-
mitting literature from the Is-
rael Legation in Bucharest.
Elizabeta Herzl is being held
without formal charges.
Efraim Singer, a Cluj news-
paperman, received a 20-year
sentence for "attempting to
smuggle forbidden materials
abroad," which the AJC said
consisted of a collection of
poems. Lupu and Roza Sames
of Galati were imprisoned be-
cause they had been in train-
ing for farm life in Israel more
than ten years before the Ro-
manian regime outlawed such
activities.
It had previously been re-
ported that Romanian authori-
ties had arrested every Roma-
nian Jew who had ever worked
for the Israel Legation.

Israel to Provide
Brazil with Storage
Facilities in Haifa

RIO DE JANEIRO, (JTA) —
Israel has declared its willing-
ness to provide Brazil with
storage and dock facilities in
the Mediterranean port of
Haifa. Janio Quadros, an oppo-
sition leader in the Brazilian
Parliament, disclosed that Is-
raeli Prime Minister David Ben-
Gurion had agreed to provide
Brazil with the facilities, if
asked to do so.
Quadros, a Presidential can-
didate in the forthcoming Bra-
zilian elections, met Premier
Ben-Gurion on a visit to Israel
during his recent world-wide
tour. In his discussion with the
Israeli Premier, Quadros point-
ed out to Ben-Gurion the ad-
vantages of storage facilities at
Haifa for Brazil's growing trade
with the Middle East.

MAC Warns Israel
on Exnellinz Beduin

UNITED NATIONS. (JTA)—
A resolution adopted by the
Egyptian-Israel Mixed Armis-
tice Commission, with Israel ab-
sent, condemned Israel for al-
legedly expelling a group of 350
Beduin from the Negev into the
United Arab Republic.
The MAC, which Israel is
boycotting, called on Israel to
implement provisions of an
MAC resolution of May 30, 1951,
dealing with transfers of per-
sons across frontiers or armis-
tice lines and to a resolution
calling for repatriation of cer-
tain Beduin tribes to Israel-
controlled territory.

Mark '70th Anniversary of
Jewish Colony in Argentina
BUENOS AIRES, (JTA) —
Celebrations marking the 70th
anniversary of the founding of
Moisesville, the first Jewish ag-
ricultural colony in Argentina,
started at that provincial town
northwest of here. Public build-
ings in the town were decorated
with flags for the occasion. The
colony of Moisesville, named
after the Biblical lawgiver, was
settled in 1889 by a group of
80 Jewish immigrant families.
