41 Sentenced for Attempting Emigration

`And Ye Shall Dwell in Booths'

Synagogues to Mark Festival of Sukkot

"Ye shall dwell in booths
seven days . . . that your gen-
erations may know that I made
the children of Israel to dwell
in booths when T brought them
out of the land of Egypt."
This passage from Leviticus
(23:42-43) is the basis for the
celebration of S u k k o t, the
world's first Thanksgiving Day,
when Jews show appreciation
for the harvest through prayer.
Orthodox and Conservative
congregations will observe the
Sukkot festival for two days,
this Saturday and Sunday, while
Reform congregations will ob-
serve only the first day. The
holiday beginS at sundown this
evening.
Following is a schedule of
services and, wherever possible,
the titles of sermons to be
preached from the pulpit:
Cong. Beth Shalom
Services are scheduled at 5:45
p.m., today and Saturday, and
at 9 a.m., Saturday and Sunday,
with Rabbi Mordecai S. Halpern
and Cantor Ruben Erlbaum of-
ficiating.
At 10:30 a.m., Sunday, there
will be a special ceremony of
consecration for children who
have just entered the religi-
ous school nursery class and
the mid-week primary school.
Cong. Ahavas Achim
Services at 5:30 p.m., today,
and at 8:45 a.m., Saturday and
Sunday. On Saturday, the Bar
Mitzvahs of Steven Jay Tillinger
and Donald Goldstein will be
observed.
TeMple Emanu-El
At Sukkot eve services
planned for 8:15 p.m., today,
Rabbi Milton Rosenbaum will
preach on "Herman Wouk's
Faith and Mine." The sermon
topic at 10:30 a.m. services Sat-
urday will be "A Handful of
Difference."
Children of the religious
school will bring baskets of fruit
to decorate the temple sukkah.
After the holiday, the baskets
will be distributed to needy
families.

place at 4:45 p.m., today and
Saturday, and at 9 a.m., Satur-

At 8:30 p.m. services today,

Prison sentences and fines were
imposed by the Moroccan Court
of Tangiers on each of 41 per-
sons tried Oct. 5 and 6 on
charges of allegedly seeking to
emigrate from the country or
allegedly having helped organ-
ize illegal emigration.
Two of the defendants, who
were arrested several months
ago by Moroccan authorities,
were each given one year in
jail and ordered to pay 250,000
Moroccan francs, which is con-
sidered a very heavy fine.
The others brought before the
court, which reportedly dealt
with the defendants in a rather

arbitrary fashion, received sen-
tences ranging from six months
suspended prison terms to six-
month' jail terms. No informa-
tion was available about the
conditions under which Moroc-
can police rounded up and ar-
rested the 39 persons brought
to trial in addition to the two
men known to have been jailed.

New High in Holy Days Israel Bond
Sales; Record Set at Adas Shalom

Israel Bond sales during the
High Holy Days are setting a
new record this year, it is re-
ported by Phillip Stollman,
chairm a n of the religious
groups' committee of the Israel
Bond Organization.

Stollman reported that incom-
plete returns on Tuesday, with
two synagogues yet to report
and Congregation Bnai David
to make its appeal on Shmini
Atzeret, were $297,000. The en-
tire total last year was $300,000.
An all,time local record was
set by Adas Shalom Synagogue
where the sales totaled
$151,000, as against $147,000
