For his many years of service
to the community, to Israel and
to the cause of education, Prof.
Isaiah Leo Sharfman will be
honored this Saturday with a
testimonial dinner sponsored by
the Ann Arbor-Ypsilant i-
Jackson Israel Bond Committee.
The program will take place
at 7 p.m., at the Michigan
Union, in Ann Arbor.
Nearly four years ago, the
entire Michigan community and

educators throughout the world
joined in tribute to Prof. Sharf-
man on the occasion of his 70th
birthday.
Retired now as chairman of
the department of economics at
the University of Michigan, he
had previously served in the
school for 43 years and was
chairman for nearly 30 years.
During his career, in which
his love of teaching won out
many times over attractive
offers from private business
firms, he became known as a
noted scholar, an able adminis-
trator and a friend to thousands
of his students.
A graduate of Harvard Uni-
versity Law School, Prof. Sharf-

man was admitted to practice
by the Massachusetts Bar Asso-
ciation in 1909. He served as
assistant in economics at Har-
vard from 1908 to 1910, after
which he joined the faculties of
Stanford University and the
Imperial Pei-Yang University,
in Tientsin, China.
A member of the board of
trustees of Brandeis University,
he has been active in the Zionist
movement and is affiliated with
the American Friends of the
Hebrew University, American
Jewish Historical Society, Con-
ference of Jewish Relations, the
American Jewish Committee,
and is a Fellow of the Jewish
Agency of Arts and Sciences.
Prof. Sharfman was chairman
of the emergency and arbitra-
tion boards established under
the Railway Labor Act of 1936,
chief investigator of public
utilities for the National Civic
Federation; director of investi-
gation of anti-trust policies for
the National Industrial Con-
ference Board; referee for the
National Railroad Adjustment
Board and associate member of
National War Labor Board.
Also to his credit, he was
president of the American Eco-
nomics Association and the
author of several volumes and
articles on economic problems.
While at U. of M., he has
been a devoted friend to the
Bnai Brith Hillel Foundation, is
a generous supporter of the
United Jewish Appeal and is a
warm friend of the state of
Israel.
He is married to the former
Minnie Shikes, of Dorchester,
Mass., The couple will be wed
for 50 years next July 7. They
have three children, Nelson
Ames, Warren Leonard and
Mrs. Marcia Louise Gilmartin
and six grandchildren all resid-
ing in the East.

Temple Israel Cub Pack
Graduates Two to Scouts

At the monthly meeting of
Cub Scout Pack 146 of Temple
Israel, Jerry Kaufman and Ricky
Oppenheim, two Webelos of the
Pack were graduated into Boy
Scout Troop 146, also sponsored
by the temple.
All boys, 8 to 11, wishing to
join the Cub Scouts should call

office. Boys will be placed in
a den near their homes.

Activities

Announce Betrothal
of Elizabeth Rose

Mumford Tankers swam to a
47-39 victory in their first meet
of the season, Sept. 30. against
Cass Tech. Capturing firsts for
the team were Steven Lash. 50-
yard freestyle; Joe Fineman,
100-yard free; Marty Deutsch,
200-yard free; Allan Jones, 100-
yard butterfly; and the free-
style and medley relay teams.
Yesterday, the swimmers took
on Pershing.
Representing Mumford at the
Detroit Police Student Council
are Jimmy Grossman and Rich-
ard Leach who will meet with
students from other Detroit
high schools to discuss current
teen-age questions.
Five Mumfordites spent six
weeks last summer touring Is-
rael, sponsored by United Syna-
gogue Youth. They are Naida
Bader, Priscilla Beresh, Rachel-
le Craft, Marilyn Dann and Paul
Stern.
Hampered by a watered-down
field, the Mustangs were de-
feated by the Pershing Dough-
boys, 14-13, last Thursday. Scor-
ing for Mumford was Jim Ses-
sion who thrilled the crowd with
and 88-yard touchdown run. A
Pershing sprinkler was left on
over night, accounting for the
muddy conditions.
Today the squad battles tradi-
tional rival, Central, 3:30, at
Mumford.
M-Week will be celebrated at
Mumford Oct. 26-29. Among the
festivities planned are a parade
through the school, a pep rally,
a football game against North-
ern, and School Color Day.
While most Mumfordites
were spending their summer
days swimming or playing ten-
nis, Larry Jackier and Richard
Leach practiced government
first-hand. They were Mum-
ford's representatives to Wolve-
rine Boys' State. Boys from all
over Michigan met at Michigan
State University June 18-25 set-
ting up a mock state govern-
ment.

MISS ELIZABETH, ROSE

Mr. and Mrs. Saul Rose, of
Balmoral Dr., announce the
engagement of their daughter,
Elizabeth, to Sanford Hansell,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Abraham
Hansell, of Salem, 0.
Miss Rose graduated from
the Liggitt School, and pres-
ently is a senior at Mt. Holy-
oke College. Mr. Hansell grad-
uated from Williams College,
and is now attending the Har-
vard University law school.

Student Zionists Slate
Sukkot Fete 'a la Israel'

A Sukkot. celebration "a la Is-
rael" will be held by the Stu-
dent Zionist Organization in con-
junction with Habonim at 8:30
p.m: Oct. 8 at the Hayim Green-
berg Center, 19161 Schaefer.
The public is invited to a pro-
gram of dances by the Habonim
dance group, dramatic readings,
and community singing and
dancing. Special feature will be
a sakkat erected in honor of
the festival.
Classes in conversational He-
brew and Israeli dancing are
new activities being set up by
SZO, -a group comprised of uni-

Center Lists Its
Cinema Program

The Center Cinema Forum, a
Sunday evening series of out-
standing films and speakers, has
announced the remainder of its
fall season. All programs are
at the Aaron De Roy Theater
of the Jewish Community Cen-
ter, 18100 Meyers.
Next program will be "What
Makes It Funny," at 8 p.m.,
Oct. 18, with three comedy clas-
sics, Chaplain's "Tillie's Punc-
tured Romance," W. C. Fields'
"The Barber Shop," and Rob-
ert Benchley's "How To Take
a Vacation."
A panel of noted humorists,
TV favorite Soupy Sales, Mick-
ey Shorr, WXYZ disc jockey,
and Rubin Weiss of the "Soupy's
On" show, will lead the dis-
cussion. Chairman and host will
be Robert Molner.
Capital punishment is the
theme of the Nov. 1 show. The
French classic, "We Are All
Murderers," will be followed
by a discussion led by attorney
Harold Norris. Chairman and
host will be Robert Molner.
"The Golem" is scheduled
for Nov. 22, with a discussion
led by Moishe Haar, principal
of the Sholem Aleichem School.
This film will be a part of the
eighth annual Jewish Book Fair.
Chairman and host will be Dr.
Ernest Gaynes.
Senator Phillip A. Hart will
lead the discussion at the fifth

film, "Mr. Smith Goes to
Washington," Dec. 13. Chair-
man and host will be Harold
Black.

Concluding attraction of the
fall series will be "Fear and
Classified ads bring fast results! Desire," Jan. 3.
