Women Join Torch Drive March to Get $222,000 from Area Homes Many women in the commu- nity will be among the hun- dreds of volunteer solicitors who will begin calling on homes and businesses in North- west Detroit this Tuesday, as the 11th annual Torch Drive gets underway. Mrs. Ruth Dorfman, of 20001 Braile, serves as co-chairman of Region 7, and Mrs. Jack Portney, of 16901 Washburn, is co-chairman of Region 6, which have a combined goal of $222,000. Other workers include the following division and area chairmen: Mesdames L o u i s Kashdan, Robert Elliott, B. D. Davis, Sidney Adas, Samuel W. Leib, Nathan Salicoff, Saul Glueckman,' Ludwig Boraks, Milton Levy and Robert Ban- yai. A number of Torch Drive leaders will attend the cam- paign kickoff luncheon earlier Tuesday, at the Sheraton-Cadil- lac Hotel, when Miss America will be the guest. Tuesday eve- ning will mark the lighting of the 54-foot gas torch at the foot of Woodward. Farband Tribute to David Pinsky A memorial evening in trib- ute to David Pinsky, former na- tional Farband president, is planned by the City Committee of Farband in Detroit. Mr. Pinsky, the noted poet, dramatist and writer, passed away recently in Haifa, Israel. The program in his memory will take place Wednesday eve- ning, in the Hayim Greenberg Center. Mrs. Benjamin Shwayder, the former Reva Clamage, of Chi- cago, is realizing a long-time ambition in this, her first solo show. Although her actual career began ten years ago with Sarkis Sarkisian, director of the Society of Arts and Crafts, she had been determined to paint since childhood. Education at the University of Chicago, marriage and a family delayed her 'ambition. But as soon as her family was grown (including two sons, Warren and Richard), Mrs. Shwayder headed for a full- time profession at the easel set up in her award-winning con- temporary home. On the one day a week Mrs. Shwayder sets aside for paint- ing without interruptions, the disciplined artist neither re- ceives visitors nor answers phone calls. A member of the Committee for the Archives of American Art at the Detroit Institute of Arts, she has had her work exhibited at the Michigan Artists Show, Wayne County Show, Kirk of the Hills ; Uni- versity of Michigan, Michigan State University, Temple Israel Show and Art for Young Col- leCtors. In her forthcoming show, sponsored by Lester Arwin, director of the Grinnell Gal- leries, Mrs. Shwayder will dis- play 25 oils, water colors and caseins.
