Early Ushering
in of Sabbath

Traditional Jews usher in
the Sabbath a while before
sunset, thus giving the Sab-
bath additional time, instead
of waiting until sunset itself
to usher it in.
Basically, the reasoning of
the sages for 'his practice is
very practical. Man should never
allow himself the leisure of
waiting for the last minute to
do that which tradition requires
of him. He would very often be
late in his performance. Only
the Almighty Himself can be
trusted with the ability to do
precise • timing. Furthermore,
the rabbis state that the Sab-
bath is like a desirable guest
for which we wait all week. In-
stead of waiting until the last
minute for the arrival of the
guest, a gracious host is al-
ways eager and ready before-
hand to receive him. He even
goes half way to greet him and
escort him into his abode. So
is it with the Jew on the eve
of the Sabbath. He shows his
eagerness to receive the Sab-
bath properly in making him-
self ready and accepting the
Sabbath earlier than sunset,
which is the exact time of its
arrival. The Kabbalists have
an additional reason. They claim
that the fires of Gehenna
(Hell) which punish the wicked
on the Sabbath, are extinguished
on the Sabbath. The time of
their extinction is that point
in which the community accepts
the Sabbath. The earlier we
accept the Sabbath, the earlier
do the deceased souls find
relief from the flaming inferno
of Gehenna.
Some Jews especially look
at the Sabbath candles while
making the Kiddush over the
wine.
The candles are regarded by
some as a source of divine light.
The rabbis claim that, in the
course of the busy and tumult
ous week, man is liable to lose
part of his sight and part of
his light by proceeding at an
excessive rate in his daily pur
suits. Indeed it is often the
case that our haste makes us
hurriedly lose sight of the many
wonderful things of life around
us. On the eve of the Sabbath,
when man finds his leisure and
is making Kiddush over the
wine, he gazes towards the
candles, as if to restore his ap
preciation and vision which has
been so blurred during the
week in his haste. The visions
lost during the week are thus
restored on the Sabbath b

deed, 'do bring back emotions
of thanks and enjoyment for the
many fine things we have ir.
