A New Year Message on Canvas
"The Third Allegory," painted by the noted artist Ben
Shahn, was inspired by the Bible story (Sam. H, 6:22) of the
triumphal entry of King David and 30,000 selected men of
Israel bearing the Ark of the Lord into the City of David.
The painting is in the collection of the Jewish Community
Center of Buffalo, N. Y. One of many works of art on Jewish
themes which have been acquired by Jewish Community
Centers and YM-YWHAs affiliated with the National Jewish
Welfare Board, "The Third Allegory" symbolizes the deep
roots in Jewish tradition shared by these more than 350
community organizations, and conveys an especially meaningful
message during this High Holy Day season.

‘Modeh
Happy New Year
"Modeh Ani" is the name
given to a brief prayer which
is recited upon rising in the
morning. It constitutes the first
two words of the prayer which
goes as follows: "I give thanks
unto Thee 0' King, who liveth
and endureth, who hast merci-
fully restored my soul unto me.
Great is Thy faithfulness."
One of the earliest sources to
mention this prayer is the
"Seder ha-Yom" of Moses ben
Machir in the 16th century. The
commentaries on the prayer
book claim that this prayer
was later incorporated into
the morning liturgy which
ends: "Blessed art Thou 0' Lord
who restorest souls unto the
dead." The reason for the sub-
stitution is that the origional
prayer contains the name of
God and would thus require the
individual to wash his hands
before reciting it, as is required
of anyone waking from his
sleep.
The substitute "Modeh Ani,"
without the name of G-d, allows
the individual to recite a prayer
immediatly upon opening his
eyes .The reason for the original
prayer is that one should ap-
preciate, every time he wakens,
that his soul had given unto the
Lord during his sleep and that
the Lord returned it to the in-
dividual as a token of grace and
mercy, whether he deserved it
back or not. This also brings
into focus the tradional belief
in the resurrection of the dead
and supplies to a doubting in-
dividual some proof in the as-
sumption that the same G-d who
gives man back his soul each
morning after his sleep can also
return his soul to him after the
long sleep in the after-life.
Samuel bar Nahman is quoted
in the Midrash (Bereshit Rab-
bah, 68) as saying that every
man should say in the morning:
"I give thanks to Thee, 0' King,
for leading me from darkness
to light."
