Richard Wagner: Musical Genius?
Or, Psychotic Hate-Monger?
The bridal chorus from
Wagner's Lohengrin has become
as much a part of the Jewish
wedding ceremony as bridal
bouquets and rice.
And yet, Harry Simonhoff
points out in a Seven Art fea-
ture article, Richard Wagner,
so admired for his musical
genius, wrote a vicious pam-
phlet, "Judaism in Music,"
which became a textbook for
anti-Semitism throughout
Europe.
Wagner put an end to toler-
ance in the art world in the
middle of the 19th century, ac-
cording to Simonhoff. Before
Wagner climbed from the
depths of poverty to the heights
of fame, the outstanding names
in music were Mendelssohn,
Meyerbeer, Halevy, Offenbach
and other Jews.
His strange case of "Judeo-
phobia" is witnessed in the four
gigantic music-dramas of The
Ring cycle "In his written
instructions on the original
score," Simonhoff writes,
"Wagner directed that the vocal
delivery of the two Nibelungs
should be 'the Jewish manner of
speech—shrill, hissing, buzzing,
a wholly foreign and arbitrary
distortion of our idiom'."
Hitler was an admirer ' of
Wagner, for apparent reasons.
Rather than agree to uncondi-
tional surrender, regardless of
German suffering and loss of
life, he preferred the Wag-
nerian touch: "to crash the
Reich into a mighty ruin in
keeping with the Gotterdame-
rung, the twilight of the gods,"
writes Simonhoff.
The psychotic hate carried
out by Hitler in his concentra-
tion camps could have been
taken directly from Wagner's
last paragraph of "Judaism in
Music" where he addresses the
Jews: "But think you that one
thing only can redeem you from
the burden of your curse: the
redemption of Ahasuerus—an-
nihilation."
"Wagner's Judeophobia did
not stop with music," Simonhoff
writes. "He embraced racism in
all its aspects. Jews became the
demons exploiting 'the adorable
and beautiful Germans' as de-
scribed by his 'Meistersinger'
who dogmatized that by con-
trolling the banks and the press,
Jews 'dominated the entire Ger-
man life.
"But he insisted that there

is something racially mystical
about the German language
which Jews could never hope to
acquire. In the face of Heinrich
Heine's exquisite handling of
the language in' poetry and
prose, • Wagner argued that Jews
could never feel, understand or
create in German. Nazis mouth-
ed this slogan until their gas
chambers were seized by the
allied forces."
Simonhoff calls attention to
the fact that Wagner's daugh-
ter married the arch anti-
Semitic Englishmen Houston
Stewart Chamberlain, whose
"Foundation of the Nineteenth
Century" "became a Bible to
the Nazis." Too, the widow of
W a g n e r's son Siegfried was
among the first in the art world
to back Adolph Hitler. "It was
her prestige as owner of Wag-
ner's Music Drama Theater at
Beyreuth that enabled Shikel-
gruber to meet and influence
the German intelligentsia."
And yet, "strong evidence"
leads to the belief that Wagner
was the son of Ludwig Geyer,
an actor of Jewish descent who
became his stepfather, following
the separation of his mother
and Karl Friedrich Wagner at
the time Richard was born.
Wagner's creed, according to
Simonhoff, was that "Jews as an
alien race cannot possibly com-
prehend the German soul.
Since he held that people think
with their blood, a Jewish artist
could not express or interpret
the Germanic spirit. Thus, if
he composes music he intro-
duces an alien element which
corrupts the pure fountainhead
of Teutonic Kultur.
"It follows quite logically
that all music written by Jew-
ish composers must be torn
root and branch out of German
art . . . Wagner's dream was
symbolically realized with the
destruction of Felix Mendels-
sohn's marble statue at Dussel-
dorf."
Yet, Wagner, for his own
benefit, "utilized the talents of
Herman Levi to conduct the
international premiere of Par-
sifal at Beyreuth . . . But his
subconscious wishes were com-
pletely fulfilled when Jewish
singers, conductors, violinists,
pianists and composers were
either banished or murdered in
concentration camps . . . "
"How," asks Simonhoff, "can
Jewish parents lead their sons
and daughters to the marriage
canopy in the synagogue, to the„
crashing rhythmic chorus of
Wagner's Wedding March?"
