the U.S. and in 72 overseas
countries.
In the new state of Hawaii,
servicemen from all the islands
and from distant posts in the
Pacific will gather at services
at Hickam Field and in the
Aloha Chapel in Honolulu.
Chaplain Jason Z. Edelstein,
Jewish chaplain in Hawaii, will
officiate. New Year hospitality
and a break-the-fast dinner at
the close of Yom Kippur will
be provided by the Hawaii JWB
Armed Services Committee.
The traditional New Year
greeting will be heard in Korea
at New Year services and the
religious retreat for 400 serv-
icemen to be conducted by
Chaplains David M. Weinstock
and Sanford D. Shanblatt. Chap-
lain Arthur Langenauer, in the
last named area, will deliver a
New Year message to the
troops. The address will be car-
ried on the entire network of
the National Broadcasting Com-
pany.
The solemn notes of the
shofar will be heard in Ger-
many, not too far from for-
mer extermination camps, as
well as in Iceland, Greenland,
Europe, in ancient syna-
gogues of North Africa, in all
stations in the Caribbean, and
on U.S. Naval vessels at sea
during the High Holy Days.
These ships were stocked
with JWB religious supplies
by Jewish chaplains and USO-
JWB staffers before the ships
left port.
Thousands of pounds of
kosher chicken and fish, along

with large quantities of re-
ligious items, have been.shipped
by JWB to domestic and over-
seas installations for use by
Jewish chaplains at services.
Rabbis and chaplains carry-
ing JWB supplies will fly thou-
sands of miles from the states
on Rosh Hashanah missions to
overseas bases. Chaplain Ed-
ward Ellenbogen, of McChord
Air Force Base, Wash., will fly
to Iceland; Chaplain Jack Glick-
man, of McGuire Air Force
Base, N.J., will officiate at U.S.
Stations in Bermuda and the
Azores; Rabbi Selwyn Geller, of
Princeton, N.J., will fly to Cuba,
and Rabbis Abraham Avrech
and Ralph Weisberger will
cover Air Force bases in New-
foundland, Labrador and Green-
land. Rabbi Nathan Witkin,
USO-JWB staffer in Balboa and
part-time chaplain, recently
covered 10,000 miles on his pre-
holiday tour of all U.S. bases
in Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands,
British West Indies, Panama
and the Canal Zone.
A pre-holiday New Year mis-
sion by a Jewish chaplain based
in North Africa, will make pos-
sible services on that continent,
and in Greece and Turkey. In
addition, arrangements have
been made for men of the U.S.
Sixth Fleet in the Mediter-
ranean, who will attend on-ship
services, or come to synagogue
services in Spain, France and
Italy. Aiding Jewish chaplains
in overseas areas will be the
five USO-JWB workers sta-
tioned in Alaska, France, Japan,
Italy and Panama.
