mulled over by producers this
year is the story of the Dead
Sea Scrolls. a detective story set
in the Middle East, an espionage
thriller, the tale of an Ameri
can boy and an English girl
who meet on a tour of the Holy
Land, a plot concerning a group
of anonymous political refugees
on an unidentified border, a
story with Eilat as the back-
ground and another with - a
kubbutz, the story of Theodor
Herzl . and an epic drama of the
state's creation.
There are many factors, how-
2ver, that are holding back the
development of the industry
here. The lack of sufficient cap-
ital and investors -to make high
stake gambles on the success of
a motion picture is perhaps the
most important.
The language problem is an-
other drawback. Israel's 2,000,-
000 people cannot afford a He-
brew film, and Israeli actors
cannot do their best in a for-
eign language. A motion picture
industry also needs a highly
efficient world-wide distribu-
tion organization to handle its
celluloid product.
Surmounting formidable ob-
stacles has been the driving
force of the state and out of
such challenges daring and true
creativeness often spring. The
next few years will tell wheth-
er Israel has the will and re-
sources to measure up to this
latest creative prospect.

oratorios, but in human voice
when it speaks from its instant
