'Israel Socialism
Pains Khrushchev

SAN FRANCISCO, (JTA)
—The question of Moscow's
unfriendly attitude toward
Israel was raised with So-
viet Premier Khrushchev
by Walter Reuther, presi-
dent of the United Auto
Workers, during the dinner
meeting held here by seven
vice-presidents of the AFL-
CIO with Khrushchev.
Reuther told the Soviet
Premier: "We think that
the country in the free
world nearest to democratic
socialism is Israel. Yet the
Russian attitude toward Is-
rael has been most un-
friendly."
Premier Khrushchev re-
plied that the Soviet gov-
ernment "has no instrument
that could measure the so-
cialism in Israel." He there-
by tossed his head almost
disdainfully.
Reuther, pursuing the
question, continued: "You
have not been there. I have
been there, and I have seen
how the Histadrut, the mag-
nificent Israeli labor move-
ment, which owns 60 per-
cent of the production, sup-
ports the nation and aids
its progress." Khrushchev
preferred not to continue
the conversation on this
ciihieet.

Rockefeller, Wagner
Attend Temple Opening

NEW YORK, (JTA)—A week-
long dedication of a new
$1,500,000 temple was begun by
the Reform congregation
Shaaray Tefila, once known as
the West End Synagogue. Gov-
ernor Nelson Rockefeller and
Mayor Robert Wagner partici-
pated in the opening service.
The congregation, which is
more than 100 years old, was
founded as an Orthodox group,
but in 1879 it voted to abandon
Orthodoxy in favor of Reform
Judaism. During the last nine
months that the new temple
was under construction, the con-
gregation conducted its worship
in a Unitarian church.
