Shomrey Emunah, with Rabbi Sholem Flam and Presi- dent Joseph Kadans at the helm, is ready to serve the Or- thodox community residing in the vicinity of Schaefer and Clarita during the High Holi- days. As in the past three years, the congregation will use rent- ed quarters in the Hayim Greenberg Center's Schaver Auditorium, this year perhaps . for the last time. The new con- gregation's building, now be- ing erected at the corner of Clarita and Schaefer, is almost completed. In the event that all seats in the Schaver Auditorium are re- served, the officers of the con- gregation plan to install tem- porary facilities in the new building and conduct services there. Contribution's for the build- ing of the new holy structure have been received from many sources, including a number from other cities in other states. Some donations have been re- ceived from non-Jewish sources, including a labor union and the Sen. Morton to Speak Here Senator Thruston B. Morton, of Kentucky, chairman of the Republican National Committee, will be the speaker at a $50- a-plate testimonial luncheon at Northwood Inn, Oct. 22. Wayne County sheriff. Many believe that contribut- ing to the building of a syna- gogue is the holiest of mitzvahs, following the Biblical thought that to contribute to a syna- gogue is equivalent to a direct contribution to the 'Supreme Being. General contractor J. Bacow has volunteered his services for supervising construction. Chairman of the building committee is Mark Nolan, assist- ed by David Schoichit, Charles Vikser, Charles Cohen, Nate Borinstein, Isadore Levin, Fred Weisz, and Alex Ungar. Joseph A. Foran, Milford School Superintendent, asked the school board to close the schools because "many teachers will be absent that day to ob- serve the Jewish holiday. It would be difficult to recruit 50 or 60 substitute teachers to fill the posts of some 60 teachers for the day," he said. Cancella- tion of classes, he argued, would make it possible for Jewish teachers to observe Yom Kippur and would also save substitute teachers' pay. A. H. Henkin, director of the Bureau of Jewish Education here, said the Milford school board action was dangerous "because it could lead to the further integration of religious activities into the public schools."
